Forever Young: Folk Music History Month in Harvard Square


The Harvard Square Business Association and its members in partnership with the New England Folk Music Archives (NEFMA) are pleased to announce the second annual “Community Window Gallery Project” during the month of November 2010. Windows throughout the Square will feature Vintage Photos, Folk Art, and Ephemera illustrating the rich cultural history of Folk Music in Harvard Square and a unique series of special events are in the works!


Forever Young Community Gallery Window Show:

The visual images and ephemera in the show come from the New England Folk Music Archive collection and from the private collections of photographers and collectors who spent time in Harvard Square. 

Artists and collectors include:  Melissa Bugg, John Byrne Cooke, Neale Eckstein, Byron Lord Linardos, Will Marston, Bob Morey, Steve Nelson, Barry Schneier, Dick Waterman, Don West, Eric Von Schmidt and several others.


Legendary musicians captured in photos and artwork include: Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Charles River Valley Boys, Donovan, Kweskin Jug Band, Muddy Waters, Josh White, Rev. Gary Davis, Richie Havens, Bill Monroe, Phil Ochs and a host additional of folks.


A collection of early Club 47 calendars, posters, highlights, copies of Boston Broadsides, Programs, Letters, Album Covers and other Harvard Square vintage goodies!

Peek in the following Harvard Square windows in the weeks to come to see the show: Mint Julep, Forty Winks, JP Licks, Vision House, The Harvard Coop, The Tannery, and Irving House. 


New this year! NEFMA will also host a gallery located at 30 Brattle Street featuring the work of Bob Morey and additional selections from the NEFMA collection throughout the month.


The month long focus on Folk Music and its Harvard Square roots will include a Walking-Tour Map of visual displays, historic locations and a calendar of truly “Special Events.”  

 

The Walking Tour Map will be available to pick up or download on www.harvardsquare.com 

 

Please check the website during the month of November as we add “Forever Young” special menus, drinks, and ways to get in the spirit in Harvard Square.

 

Special Live Events:

 

 Brunch with the Folks - Sunday Nov. 14th 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. Brunch and Music events at Tommy Doyle’s and Upstairs on the Square!

Start the day with great food and music by some of the area's best Americana acts. Complete details to follow.

 

 Black Sheep Reception & Concert - Thursday Nov. 18th 7:00 pm

At this special event, NEFMA will officially welcome the Black Sheep Collection into the New England Folk Music Archives. Kari Estrin's collection adds depth to the 1970's and 1980's era when Bob and Rae Ann Donlin were running Passim, Folktree Concerts was in swing, the Folk Arts Network got started, new comers Patty Larkin, Nanci Griffith, Shawn Colvin, and John Gorka were inspiring us and so much more was happening with folk music in Cambridge. Guest Artists include: Jeanie Stahl and Mason Daring, Geoff Bartley and Scott Alarik.
