José Mateo Ballet Theatre opens its 25th Anniversary Season with two distinct programs of new ballet by New England’s most innovative dance-maker, Jose Mateo with cabaret-style seating, cocktails during the show and a close-up view of the dancers.

REALM OF SUSPENSE (Oct. 29-Nov. 14) showcases Mateo’s mysterious side with

the spellbinding Covens, which premiered in 2006 to James MacMillan’s Symphony #3.

This ballet thriller is a haunting tale about love and deception amidst the hysteria

of a witch-hunt. The concert also features Streams (2009), set to Terry Riley’s

The Cusp of Magic for String Quartet and Pipa. The ballet explores the dynamic tensions between partners amid uncertainty and distrust. The Fall Season concludes with a Mateo world premiere. October 29-November 14, Friday - October 29, 8:00 pm,                                  Saturday - October 30, 8:00 pm, Sunday - October 31, 4:00 pm.

David Wax Museum, the Woes open at Club Passim - 7PM, $15/13

The David Wax Museum, "one of Boston's hottest new bands" (The Boston Globe), fuses exuberant Mexican roots music with homegrown country folk, creating a unique Mexo-Americana sound. With Latin rhythms, call-and-response hollering, accordion pumping and donkey jawbone rattling, they have won over audiences across the country.

 Regina Carter at Regattabar - 7:30PM- $30, 10:00PM- $25

When preeminent violinist Regina Carter made the decision to record an album primarily of African folk tunes, she created a great challenge for herself: how do you take beautiful traditional music and infuse it with a contemporary feel while remaining true to its past -- and then, not compromise its beauty? Her newest release, Reverse Thread, due out on E1 Entertainment on May 18th brilliantly responds to the challenge.

To achieve the uplifting and stirring result, Regina added an accordion and kora-- the West African harp traditionally played by village storytellers -- to her longstanding rhythm section. Kora virtuoso Yacouba Sissoko was brought on board to help recreate the spirit of passing stories from generation to generation. The result -- unlike anything previously heard -- is a haunting and beautiful compliment to Regina's sumptuously seductive violin.

Without the support of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation, which "awards unrestricted fellowships to talented individuals," Reverse Thread might never have been realized. As a MacArthur Fellow -- a recipient of what is commonly known as the "genius grant" -- Carter was armed with the funds and the freedom to follow her muse.

Tokyo Kid Halloween Event - Halloween Cosplay Raffle 2010:

Anyone who shows up from Noon to 5:00 p.m. in an “anime or Japanese video game costume” gets goodie bag that contains candies and one raffle ticket. The three gift certificate prizes will then be raffled off and the winners announced at 5 p.m.

You have to be present at 5 p.m. to claim your prize.  If a ticket number is called and no one claims it, the certificate will be raffled off to another ticket holder.  Also, a person can only win once.  If someone somehow manages to get two tickets and wins twice, the second prize they win will be raffled off to someone else.  We will not accept the reason of “I’m claiming the second prize for my friend who had to leave early.” At the staff’s discretion, there may be special prizes given to people who we feel are particularly well suited to their costumes or have outfits that are exceedingly well made.

Prizes awarded for best Catrina costumes. What's a Catrina?

Created by Mexican engraver and illustrator José Guadalupe Posada in 1913, la calavera catrina (elegant skeleton) is a zinc etching and iconic image of the Mexican Day of the Dead. Posada (1852–1913) often used his illustrations and engraving of skeletons to mock the upper classes and social and political injustice. La Catrina is a high-society lady wearing all her finery and her signature, large, fancy hat. She is a symbol of the rich and fashionable who despite their pretensions to importance are just as susceptible to death as the rest of us.
