Harvard Square Giving Tree

December 7th

The Harvard Square Business Association (HSBA), members and friends are generously donating hats, gloves, socks, mittens, t-shirts, and scarves. These items will be placed in water-tight zipper bags along with candy canes, chocolates and treats and will be hung on the Annual Holiday Giving Tree, located on Brattle Plaza in front of Bluestone Lane at 27 Brattle Street. Please bring your own items similarly packaged, or come and help us place ours. People are encouraged to take what they need.

To celebrate the installation of the Giving Tree on December 7 at 2:00 pm, The Boys of the St. Paul’s Choir School will perform joyous hymns and songs. These young boys have performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Leonard Bernstein on the legendary stage of Carnegie Hall, in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican for Pope Francis, and countless Boston Red Sox and Celtics games. Consisting of singers who are both artistically and technically highly developed, it may be surprising to discover that the boys range from grades 3 through 8.

Complimentary treats for those attending and for passersby will be served by HSBA staff.

The Harvard Square Business Association is collecting donations in support of the Giving Tree. All proceeds will be used to purchase items, including clothing and gift cards for food.

To make a donation, please contact Bill Manley.

Wintery Songs in Eleventy Part Harmony is a loose collaboration of Boston-based musicians organized by veteran singer/songwriter Jennifer Kimball, who celebrate the holiday season with their delightful annual program of sacred, secular and wintery pop music rearranged, reharmonized, and often just plain turned on its head. Wielding fiddles, cellos, ukes, guitars and glockenspiels, this ensemble re-envisions the sounds of the season by reharmonizing classic songs, reinterpreting pop tunes, composing new songs for the season and bringing unknown pop gems to the lexicon of holiday-ish music.

From Sinatra to Tchaikovsky, Isaac Watts to Ana Egge, this beautifully eclectic mix of sacred and secular music inspires a reinvention of the holiday experience; one where minor keys are as familiar as major, the church has transformed into a club where all are welcome and the season’s darkness is as deep as it’s festive lights are welcoming.

As traditional Irish music and dance continue to enjoy phenomenal success both in the United States and in Ireland, Áine Minogue has worked to explore their themes and to understand their very essence. Her voice, though uniquely her own, also reflects the lyricism and richness to be found in Irish music, mythology, and poetry.

Born and raised in Borrisokane, County Tipperary, Áine comes from a large musical family and an environment in which she was encouraged to pursue expertise in a number of different instruments. This broad knowledge of Irish traditional music has underpinned her success in arranging and composing her own music.

She has a dozen solo recordings on several labels including RCA Victor/BMG and has been nominated for FIMA awards for her work as a record producer. Her TV production work on “A Winter’s Journey” earned her a New England EMMY ® nomination.

December 29th, 30th, 31st

Ellis Paul doesn’t just write songs; he’s a guitar-carrying reporter who covers the human condition and details the hopes, loves, losses of those he observes, turning their stories into luminous pieces of music that get under your skin and into your bloodstream. And much like the artists who have influenced him, everyone from Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon to the singer-songwriter who is undoubtedly his greatest inspiration, Woody Guthrie, Paul weaves deeply personal experiences with social issues and renders them as provocative works that are as timely as they are timeless. Born and raised in Maine, Paul attended Boston College on a track scholarship and in the evenings became a fixture on the city’s open mic circuit. After winning a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriter competition, he caught the ear of folk luminary Bill Morrissey, who produced his indie album Say Something in 1993. This led to a seven-album contract with Rounder Records and the 1994 album, Stories.

The program will feature works from a variety of time periods, countries, and instrumentations, accompanied by the Back Bay Brass, percussion, organ, and harp. In addition to traditional favorites, including Theodore Marier’s beloved setting of “Silent Night,” the musical selections will include timeless choral Christmas standards such as Britten’s “Hymn to the Virgin,” Pearsall’s “In dulci jubilo,” and Victoria’s eight-part “Ave Maria”.

In a small fishing village off the shores of Galway Bay, a community gathers in the local pub to celebrate the season. A child enters looking for a package that may have been delivered for his mother, who comes from another coastal town – in Cabo Verde. Songs and dances are shared, and the pub dissolves into a portal for fantasy with a transformative retelling of the Selkie story, a Celtic myth about living between two worlds. Irish songs, jigs, and reels share the stage with dance, drumming, and traditional songs from Cabo Verde. In the Revels tradition, new community is catalyzed, and with it, hopes for a new year.

City of Cambridge

While serving food at the Tuesday Night Meals Program at First Parish in December 2013, current Vice-Mayor Marc McGovern spoke with an unhoused woman who was in desperate need of warm blankets or a sleeping bag. That night the Winter Warmth Drive was born. Each year, with the help of First Parish, The Harvard Square Business Association and Cambridge residents, we raise over $20,000 to purchase hundreds of sleeping bags that we distribute to the unhoused community in Cambridge. These bags have been called, “life saving” and the community has now come to rely on them. We are asking for your help in raising those funds this year.
