Congratulations to long-time HSBA member, Community Charter School of Cambridge (CCSC) for being named a 2024 School of Recognition by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

Dear CCSC Students, Families, and Staff,

We are thrilled to share that CCSC is one of only 57 (out of over 1,700 public schools statewide) named a 2024 School of Recognition by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) as part of its annual accountability process. Recognitions such as these are a reflection of the commitment that we see each and every day in our classrooms, study halls, and office hours as our students tackle rigorous classwork, push each others’ thinking, and help each other persist through challenging assignments – and we know you see this too at the public library, before practice, and at home at the kitchen table. We are so grateful for the collaborative partnerships between our students, families, and staff that make this work possible and push us all to continue to grow and achieve.

The Department also released Spring 2024 MCAS results today. We are incredibly proud of CCSC’s strong results and wanted to share a few highlights:

– In 6th grade, CCSC students outperformed the state average by 10 percentage points on the Math MCAS and 18 percentage points on the ELA MCAS. Student growth in 6th grade outpaced the state by 23-26 percentage points.

– In 7th grade, CCSC students outperformed the state average by 16 percentage points on the ELA MCAS and 18 percentage points on the Math MCAS.

– Our English Learners outperformed the state average by 19 percentage points on the Math MCAS and 22 percentage points on the ELA MCAS.

We know that MCAS are only one measure of student learning and wanted to celebrate a few other academic achievements from last year:

– 84% of the Class of 2024 took and passed one or more AP classes during their time at CCSC. Forty percent of the Class of 2024 earned a passing score of 3 or above on at least one AP exam, which may earn a student college credit or advanced course placement.

– Eleven CCSC students earned the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy last year in Amharic, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Spanish, and Yoruba. This recognizes high school graduates who attain high function and academic levels of proficiency in English and a world language.

We will be holding an Academic Awards Ceremony to celebrate students who demonstrated high achievement and/or high growth on these high stakes exams on Tuesday, October 8th during Family Conferences. We hope you are able to attend and help us cheer on our amazing scholars.

Thank you for all you do to celebrate, challenge, and champion our amazing students.

Best,
Becki Norris
