Art Study Center Seminar at Home: Slavery’s Landscape
April 21, 2021 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Since we are unable to welcome you into the museums at this time, we are bringing our experts to you in the online series Art Study Center Seminars at Home.
This seminar will explore how photographers from the Civil War era constructed landscapes of slavery. What symbols and facts did they draw upon, and what narratives and interpretations were they in dialogue with and which did they promote?
Join Makeda Best, photography curator and author of Elevate the Masses: Alexander Gardner, Photography, and Democracy in Nineteenth-Century America (2020), as she explores how Alexander Gardner and others presented the infamous Franklin and Armfield slave pen, located in present-day Alexandria, Virginia.
Led by:
Makeda Best, Richard L. Menschel Curator of Photography, Division of Modern and Contemporary Art
