About

Internationally renowned photographer Barry Schneier captures Boston’s unique and impacting folk music scene in his new book “The Song is Still Being Written”, set to be released on September 5. The book is a collection of photos and narratives capturing stories of singer-songwriters, past, present, and future who have made the Boston/Cambridge area their home for artistic development and  specifically from those who have graced one of the most heralded performance spaces in folk history, Harvard Square’s Passim (originally Club 47). For “The Song is Still Being Written,” Barry shot intimate images of every artist featured in the book. Each photo is accompanied by an interview with longtime arts journalist James Sullivan

The book can be pre-ordered at barryschneierphotography.com for September delivery.

An exhibition of the collective work will premiere in September of 2024 at the Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame at the Boch Center in Boston.

Portions of the proceeds of the book will go towards Club Passim.

Barry Schneier is a photographer and writer who began his career in the 1970s working with up and coming as well as established musicians in Boston, San Francisco and later in Los Angeles. It was there that he became immersed in the world of video and film production working on features, commercials, documentaries and eventually migrating over to the “new” genre of the era; the music video.

Barry’s work as a photographer has been exhibited in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, The Grammy Museum and is housed in permanent collections at Paramount Studios, CBS, MTV, The New England Folk Archives, Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music, the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York City and Los Angeles and Proud Gallery in London. His work has also appeared in numerous books, publications as well as featured on album art. Barry is most noted for his work capturing a young Bruce Springsteen at The Harvard Square Theatre in 1974 the night music critic and writer for Rolling Stone Magazine, Jon Landau, would write in his review of the evening “I saw rock and roll future and his name is Bruce Springsteen”. The stories and photos of that evening are the subject of Barry’s book “Bruce Springsteen: Rock and Roll Future” published by Backstreets Publishing.
