Challenging the white male status quo, a group of fearless women and LGBTQ+ journalists band together to launch a new, U.S.-based digital news startup called The 19th*. Asking who’s been omitted from mainstream coverage, and how to include them, co-founders Emily Ramshaw and Amanda Zamora, along with Editor-at-Large Errin Haines and a mission-committed team, work together in their pursuit of expanded journalism. BREAKING THE NEWS documents the honest discussions around race and gender equity and inclusion among the founders, showcasing how one newsroom confronts these challenges—but this is about more than a newsroom. It’s about an America in flux, and the voices that are often left out of the American story.
Post-Film Discussion with Filmmaker Chelsea Hernandez moderated by the Globe’s Emma Platoff.
