SUMMARY:Pınar Öğrenci: Glück auf in Deutschland (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:Reflect on memory\, labor\, and belonging in this first major U.S. exhibition by Pınar Öğrenci. \nGlück auf in Deutschland marks the first major exhibition in the United States by Berlin-based artist and filmmaker Pınar Öğrenci (b. 1973). The artist’s work invites viewers to question what has been remembered or erased while imagining a future grounded in justice\, equality\, and collective healing and shaped by layered experiences of survival\, resistance\, and resilience. \nThe exhibition includes Öğrenci’s 2024 film Glück auf in Deutschland (Good Luck in Germany)\, which addresses the construction of postwar German identity in the Ruhrgebiet\, a heavily industrialized region known for coal mining and steel production. Five related collages are also on view\, reimagining the bodies of workers and their families within the Ruhr landscape and its architecture. Öğrenci’s use of the phrase Glück auf — a common way that miners wish one another a safe return after their physically grueling and dangerous work underground — resonates with the experiences of immigrant communities in present-day Germany facing right-wing extremism. \nThe photographs in the film and collages were drawn largely from the Ruhr Museum archive in Essen\, Germany\, and include works by artists from the 1950s and ’60s. In her interventions\, Öğrenci reveals how photography helped shape a homogenous\, male-centered identity for both the region and the German nation; she seeks instead to present a more inclusive visual record. Öğrenci’s work is displayed alongside historical photographs from the Busch-Reisinger Museum’s collection. \nCurated by Lynette Roth\, Daimler Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum. \nThis exhibition is supported by the Charles Kuhn Endowment Fund in the Busch-Reisinger Museum. She took a half-hour comedy show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2016 and 2017 and performed another half-hour\, “Gayby Girl”\, off-Broadway at the SoHo Playhouse in 2022 and 2023. Currently based in Brooklyn\, she is a regular at the SoHo Playhouse Huron Comedy Club and was titled “Resident Sex Symbol” at Cuckoo’s Open Mic. Originally from the Bay\, she’s performed in the Oakland Comedy Festival\, Santa Cruz Comedy Festival\, and SF Sketchfest.

DESCRIPTION:Boston-based band Jim’s Big Ego presents an original theatrical production entitled The Ego & The Oracle – an evening of spontaneous musical divination. \nPart improvisational theater\, part cabaret\, part audience participation\, The Ego & The Oracle is a live stage spectacular where shuffle play meets the I-Ching. Audience members are invited on stage to ask personal questions of The Oracle. They then spin a giant wheel containing songs by Jim’s Big Ego. When the wheel stops\, the band performs the chosen song\, which is then interpreted as the answer to the question by author Shawn Peters. The outcome can be humorous\, inspirational and/or moving. At the end of the show\, the band improvises a vamp while Jim reads and sings the unanswered questsions. \nIt is a light hearted show about synchronicity and it brings the audience together to discover we all have similar concerns and questions.

SUMMARY:The Way We Never Were: The American Professional Photographers Collection (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:How did photography construct cultural memories of postwar America? \nLife in the United States after World War II is often remembered as a time of prosperity\, stability\, and ease. The Way We Never Were examines the role that professional photography played in shaping this familiar image. Photographers working on commission for private clients\, businesses\, and civic organizations produced portraits and promotional images that did more than document everyday life—they staged and refined it\, helping define how Americans saw themselves and their nation. \nDrawn from the Harvard Art Museums’ American Professional Photographers Collection\, this exhibition brings renewed attention to a vast archive assembled in the 1970s by sociologist and curator Barbara P. Norfleet. The archive\, comprising more than 20\,000 photographs from studios active between the late 1930s and the early 1960s across the United States\, depicts weddings\, school events\, corporate gatherings\, and other social rituals—what Norfleet described as a “unique and valuable record of American life.” \nThe exhibition traces how these commissioned photographs helped create a shared visual understanding of mid-century American culture\, pointing not only to what was included\, but also to what was left out of the photographic record. Organized around themes such as the postwar economic boom\, the rise of suburbia\, cultural conformity\, and growing struggles for equal rights\, the photographs in the exhibition reflect broader social tensions around race\, gender\, class\, and belonging. By considering the tools\, techniques\, and commercial priorities that made these idealized images possible\, The Way We Never Were examines how postwar professional photography shaped an enduring vision of the past that continues to inform how it is understood today. \nCurated by Audrey Sands\, Richard L. DESCRIPTION:From New Jersey\, John Gorka is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania. \nThough small\, Godfrey Daniels was and is one of the oldest and most venerable music institutions and has long been a hangout for music lovers and aspiring musicians. In the late 1970’s\, John was one of these aspiring musicians. Although his academic coursework at Moravian College lay in Philosophy and History\, music began to offer paramount enticements. Soon he found himself living in the club’s basement and acting as resident MC and sound man\, encountering legendary folk troubadours like Canadian singer-songwriter Stan Rogers\, Eric Andersen\, Tom Paxton and Claudia Schmidt. Their brand of folk-inspired acoustic music inspired him\, and before long he was performing his own songs – mostly as an opener for visiting acts. \nIn 1998\, after five successful recordings and seven years at Windham Hill/High Street\, John felt the need for a change and decided to return to his musical roots at Red House Records. The choice was driven\, in part\, by the artistic integrity that the label represents in an industry where the business of music too often takes precedence. Now with this\, his 11th studio album\, he returns to his roots with So Dark You See\, his most compelling and traditional album to date.
