About

Ocean River Institute, in partnership with the Harvard Square Business Association, invites you to From Seas to Urban Forests: Calls for the Right Whale National Marine Sanctuary Symposium at 7pm on Wednesday, August 7th at First Parish Church, Harvard Square.

With North Atlantic Right Whales on the brink of extinction, citizens are urging the government to act. Implementing the Right Whale National Marine Sanctuary around Cape Cod from Stellwagen Bank to Block Island is crucial. These waters, where the whales break their winter fast, suffer from our actions. The Sanctuary would bring together all interest and user groups to manage the environments that whales depend on, from seas to cities to forests. There’s environmental stewardship work to be done, and it starts with policy change.

Rob Moir of the Ocean River Institute and ORI Summer Interns, Meriam Alessandroni (New York University), Jackson Dempsey (Tufts University), Lindsey Parziale (University of Vermont), and Cara Wong (Suffolk University) will describe the whale-restorative actions we can take in our neighborhoods to reverse the loss of phytoplankton growth, bolster copepod populations, decrease pollution, plant more urban Miyawaki forests, slow destructive stormwater runoff, and cool the seas.

This event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:40pm.

First Parish in Cambridge, 3 Church Street, Cambridge, MA
