SUMMARY:Pınar Öğrenci: Glück auf in Deutschland (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:Reflect on memory\, labor\, and belonging in this first major U.S. exhibition by Pınar Öğrenci. \nGlück auf in Deutschland marks the first major exhibition in the United States by Berlin-based artist and filmmaker Pınar Öğrenci (b. 1973). The artist’s work invites viewers to question what has been remembered or erased while imagining a future grounded in justice\, equality\, and collective healing and shaped by layered experiences of survival\, resistance\, and resilience. \nThe exhibition includes Öğrenci’s 2024 film Glück auf in Deutschland (Good Luck in Germany)\, which addresses the construction of postwar German identity in the Ruhrgebiet\, a heavily industrialized region known for coal mining and steel production. Five related collages are also on view\, reimagining the bodies of workers and their families within the Ruhr landscape and its architecture. Öğrenci’s use of the phrase Glück auf — a common way that miners wish one another a safe return after their physically grueling and dangerous work underground — resonates with the experiences of immigrant communities in present-day Germany facing right-wing extremism. \nThe photographs in the film and collages were drawn largely from the Ruhr Museum archive in Essen\, Germany\, and include works by artists from the 1950s and ’60s. In her interventions\, Öğrenci reveals how photography helped shape a homogenous\, male-centered identity for both the region and the German nation; she seeks instead to present a more inclusive visual record. Öğrenci’s work is displayed alongside historical photographs from the Busch-Reisinger Museum’s collection. \nCurated by Lynette Roth\, Daimler Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum. \nThis exhibition is supported by the Charles Kuhn Endowment Fund in the Busch-Reisinger Museum. Modern and contemporary art programs at the Harvard Art Museums are made possible in part by generous support from the Emily Rauh Pulitzer and Joseph Pulitzer\, Jr.\, Fund for Modern and Contemporary Art.

SUMMARY:Jane Monheit Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Jane Monheit is a jazz and adult contemporary vocalist with a deep passion for the Great American Songbook. With many highly acclaimed solo albums\, countless awards and accolades\, and over two decades of international touring  experience\, Jane has not only been an extremely successful bandleader\, but has had the privilege of making music with some of the greatest musicians\, arrangers\, and producers in jazz. \nDuring her childhood\, Jane studied woodwinds and piano\, spent a decade  performing in award winning choirs\, and participated in community theater on Long  Island. Throughout all of this\, her focus remained on jazz\, especially interpretation of the Songbook. At the age of 20\, during her senior year at the prestigious Manhattan School Of Music\, Jane placed second in the Thelonious Monk Competition\, now known as the Hancock Competition. This led to an incredible career trajectory\, catapulting Jane into the jazz stratosphere nearly overnight. \nBy 22\, Jane was working with legends such as Tommy Flanagan\, Ron Carter\, and Kenny Barron\, recording her first albums\, and touring the planet. This led to  collaborations with jazz luminaries such as Terence Blanchard\, Ivan Lins\, Tom Harrell\, John Pizzarelli\, Christian McBride\, Vince Mendoza\, Jorge Calandrelli\, and many more. Countless television appearances followed\, including David Letterman\, Conan O’Brien\, CBS Sunday Morning\, Good Morning America\, The Tonight Show\, The View\, and many popular international talk shows. Several successful film soundtracks have  also included Jane’s music\, including Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow and Never Let Me Go. \nAfter more than twenty years\, twelve studio albums and countless recorded  guest appearances\, Jane has continued to tour the world nearly nonstop\, including  playing iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall\, The Hollywood Bowl\, and headlining at nearly every legendary jazz club on the planet\, most notably NY stalwarts such as the Village Vanguard and Birdland. In addition to touring\, she also writes English lyrics for Ivan Lins\, and uses the knowledge and experience she has gained both at Manhattan  School Of Music and on the legendary bandstands of the world to educate and uplift  students worldwide. Jane resides in Los Angeles with her husband of over twenty years\, drummer Rick Montalbano\, and their son.

SUMMARY:Yixuan Huang\, piano | Light and Warmth: A Journey Through Sound | Graduating Student Project
DESCRIPTION:Yixuan Huang is a student of Jessica Osborne \nMy recital shows who I am as an artist — someone who finds comfort\, light\, and honesty in music. These works travel across time\, from Scarlatti’s clarity to Prokofiev’s intensity. Together they tell a story about warmth and strength: how music can carry both tenderness and power. \nI begin with Scarlatti’s bright and joyful sonata\, full of clean lines and energy. Schubert’s Sonata D.664 then opens a more intimate and poetic world. Clara Schumann’s Variations Op.20 brings a voice of love and courage from a female composer of the Romantic era. Prokofiev’s Sonata No.7 ends with dramatic tension and fire. Finally\, the Schubert four-hand Rondo celebrates musical friendship and connection. \nThrough this program\, I want to share how music has been my language of warmth and honesty\, something that helps me connect deeply with others and bring light to their hearts. \n\n\nMusic has been a part of Yixuan’s life for as long as she can remember. Her music grows from the melodies and rhythms that filled her childhood home. Surrounded by both classical and folk traditions\, she learned to see music as a language of warmth and honesty. Through every note\, she hopes to offer comfort and connection\, letting people feel seen\, understood\, and gently healed by sound.

SUMMARY:Lovepop Sets Out to Build the Largest Retail Kindness Wall Ever
DESCRIPTION:What if a simple handwritten note could change someone’s day—or even their life? This April\, Lovepop invites the community to experience exactly that with the launch of the Harvard Square Kindness Wall\, a living\, evolving installation designed to spark connection\, reflection\, and small but meaningful moments of kindness. Launching on April 28 (Pay It Forward Day) at Lovepop’s Harvard Square store\, the Kindness Wall will invite visitors to leave or take handwritten notes—messages of encouragement\, gratitude\, or support—creating a shared space where words have the power to uplift strangers and bring people together. At its heart\, the Kindness Wall reflects Lovepop’s belief that love is the foundation for a brighter world—and that it grows when it is shared. Known for its intricate 3D paper sculptures\, Lovepop blends art and engineering through its signature Slicegami™ technique\, transforming paper into magical cards and gifts designed to surprise\, delight\, and bring people closer together. This installation brings that same spirit off the card and into a shared\, real-world experience. “We’ve always believed that a small gesture can have a big impact\,” said Todd McKay\, Manager\, Lovepop Harvard Square. “The Kindness Wall is about creating space for those moments—where someone can give a little encouragement or receive exactly the words they didn’t know they needed.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Community-Powered Experience\nThe week of April 20th leading up to the launch\, Lovepop is partnering with local schools\, nonprofits\, and community organizations to help “pre-seed” the wall with hundreds of notes—ensuring it begins as a vibrant\, living reflection of the community it serves. Once launched\, the installation will continue to grow organically over a three-month period\, with visitors invited to contribute\, engage\, and return—each visit offering a new opportunity for connection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCollaboration with Random Note Project\nLovepop is proud to collaborate with Random Note Project\, a global initiative dedicated to spreading kindness through handwritten notes left for strangers. What Lovepop is creating\nwith the Kindness Wall is a beautiful extension of that idea—inviting an entire community to take part.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Keepsakes to Shared Moments\nFor Lovepop\, known for transforming paper into memorable keepsakes through intricate engineering and design\, the Kindness Wall represents a natural evolution—turning individual moments of connection into a shared\, collective experience. \nVisitors are encouraged to:\n● Leave a note for someone they may never meet\n● Take a note that resonates with them\n● Return to see how the wall grows and evolves over time \nWhether it’s a message of hope\, a reflection\, or a few simple words of encouragement\, each note becomes part of something bigger—a reminder that even small acts of kindness can ripple outward. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit and Participate\nLovepop is setting out to build the largest retail kindness wall ever\, with a goal of collecting more than 5\,000 handwritten notes from the community over the course of the installation. Visitors are invited to help bring the wall to life—one message at a time The Harvard Square Kindness Wall will be open to the public beginning April 28 at Lovepop Harvard Square and will remain active for approximately three months. \nThose unable to visit in person are encouraged to participate in the spirit of the project through the Random Note Project by sharing messages of kindness in their own communities. \n\n\nAbout Lovepop\nLovepop is a Boston-based company that blends maritime engineering with the Japanese art of kirigami to create intricate\, 3D pop-up cards and paper art.
