Lebe, Lache, Liebe: Experience a fresh take on traditional works through a unique lens by exploring settings and characters that were once considered off-limits.
The nineteenth-century lieder repertoire is ripe with antiquated texts, sentiments, and performance practices. Through this course, Longy students explored an in-depth study of the lieder repertoire but with an added twist: singers selected repertoire that would otherwise be off limits because of their voice type, gender, or sexuality by exploring alternative character perspectives. Working in tandem, singers and pianists explored their combined artistic perspective and turned their ideas into a one-of-a-kind performance true to themselves, separating lieder from its often cis-heteronormative, male-centric worldview and providing a more inclusive space to explore the performance of this genre in the twenty-first century.
The culminating performances will be held at the following times:
Sunday, December 3, 2023, at 8pm in the Alternative Library Performance Space
Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at 7pm in Wolfinsohn
Friday, December 8, 2023, at 8pm in Recital Room N-1
