Howard Swanson had a complicated life as a musician. His career did not take a linear path upwards, but was full of starts and stops, and various chapters. He was able to “begin again” anywhere he went. We introduce this poetic solo piano gem, “Cuckoo,” and we pair it with one of the most iconic chamber works by Schubert. After the premiere of this trio masterpiece, it was criticized for being too long. The composer cut some sections to make it shorter and that’s the version that most people hear today. However, the Horszowski Trio brings us back to where he began, with the original full version.
