LAST SUMMER is going to make you uncomfortable. This latest provocation from legendary French director Catherine Breillat examines the character of Anne (Drucker), a middle-aged lawyer who represents young victims of sexual abuse. Her marriage is stagnant but not unhappy and she has two adorable, adopted daughters. Anne’s stable life is upended when Theo, her husband’s troubled, 17-year-old son from a previous relationship, comes to live with them. At first, Theo’s sullen teenage ways grate on Anne but, when her husband leaves on a business trip, they start a passionate, unexpected, and dangerous affair. With a coolly objective eye, Breillat unflinchingly portrays the excitement and tension of this affair and crafts something along the lines of an erotic thriller as Theo and Anne impulsively make decisions that will affect the rest of their lives.
