SUMMARY:Pınar Öğrenci: Glück auf in Deutschland (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:Reflect on memory\, labor\, and belonging in this first major U.S. exhibition by Pınar Öğrenci. \nGlück auf in Deutschland marks the first major exhibition in the United States by Berlin-based artist and filmmaker Pınar Öğrenci (b. 1973). The artist’s work invites viewers to question what has been remembered or erased while imagining a future grounded in justice\, equality\, and collective healing and shaped by layered experiences of survival\, resistance\, and resilience. \nThe exhibition includes Öğrenci’s 2024 film Glück auf in Deutschland (Good Luck in Germany)\, which addresses the construction of postwar German identity in the Ruhrgebiet\, a heavily industrialized region known for coal mining and steel production. Five related collages are also on view\, reimagining the bodies of workers and their families within the Ruhr landscape and its architecture. Öğrenci’s use of the phrase Glück auf — a common way that miners wish one another a safe return after their physically grueling and dangerous work underground — resonates with the experiences of immigrant communities in present-day Germany facing right-wing extremism. \nThe photographs in the film and collages were drawn largely from the Ruhr Museum archive in Essen\, Germany\, and include works by artists from the 1950s and ’60s. In her interventions\, Öğrenci reveals how photography helped shape a homogenous\, male-centered identity for both the region and the German nation; she seeks instead to present a more inclusive visual record. Öğrenci’s work is displayed alongside historical photographs from the Busch-Reisinger Museum’s collection. \nCurated by Lynette Roth\, Daimler Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum. \nThis exhibition is supported by the Charles Kuhn Endowment Fund in the Busch-Reisinger Museum. Modern and contemporary art programs at the Harvard Art Museums are made possible in part by generous support from the Emily Rauh Pulitzer and Joseph Pulitzer\, Jr.\, Fund for Modern and Contemporary Art.

SUMMARY:Live Blues & Roots Music Returns to Harvard Square: Wednesday Nights @ The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar
DESCRIPTION:The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar and The Barrett Anderson Band are excited to announce a new weekly series\, Blues & Roots Wednesdays\, bringing live music back home to historic Harvard Square. \n“Cambridge\, our fair city\, and I share deep roots\, and I’m thrilled to find a new musical home at The Sea Hag\,” says Massachusetts-based singer/guitarist\, Barrett Anderson.  “Good music and good food are two of our most basic\, fundamental needs\,” he continues\, “What great joy they give us.  I am so happy to revel in that every Wednesday night with my dearest musical friends\, and Kari and her incredible team at The Sea Hag.  We go way back together\, and I can’t imagine all the fun we have ahead.” \nIndeed\, Anderson has strong connections to this scene.  He remembers: “My first professional experience came when I was 15\, backing up Muddy Waters’ band alums Pinetop Perkins and Bob Margolin at the original House of Blues on Winthrop Street.  A few months after that I began busking\, you’d often find me in Brattle Square or by the pit.  This would have been mid/late 90s.”  While still a teen\, Anderson was a member of The Monster Mike Welch Band and Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters (“Ronnie was my guitar hero.  Then he was my teacher\, then my boss.  Now he’s my musical Father\,” Anderson says)\, before eventually starting The Barrett Anderson Band in 2007. \nAnderson won a Boston Music Award (2013 Blues Artist of the Year)\, was on the Billboard charts (2020’s live album Hynoboogie spent 3 weeks on the Billboard Blues Album chart\, peaking at #6)\, and was nominated for a Blues Music Award (2023 Band of the Year with Anthony Geraci & The Boston Blues All-Stars)\, all the while playing nationally\, internationally\, and locally in Cambridge and the greater Boston area. \nIn addition to the musical roots\, long-time locals may recognize Anderson from a decade serving tables and bartending at The Sea Hag’s sister establishment\, Grendel’s Den\, or from Abodeon\, the mid-century modern shop started by his family. \nMusic starts every Wednesday at 6:30 at The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar\, 49 Mt Auburn St\, and there’s no cover.  “We start while people are dining\,” Anderson states.  “It forces us to play dynamically\, dig deep\, and explore the space\, creating music that doesn’t demand attention but rewards it.”  He adds with a grin “We do get to turn up and demand attention too\, we just have to time it right.” \nJoining Anderson (vocals and guitar) are Paul Loranger (upright and electric bass)\, and Joey Pafumi (drums and percussion).  “This is the core of The Barrett Anderson Band\,” Anderson explains.  “The full band has wonderful additional musicians\, but for this gig tight and light was right.  This gives us the flexibility to learn material fast and improvise easily on the spot\, allowing for regular guests and specially themed evenings.  We’re making sure that each week is rewarding and unique.” \nThe Barrett Anderson Band are digging deep into their Cambridge roots for the first string of shows\, featuring local roots rock king Dennis Brennan as a special guest. \nBlues & Roots Wednesdays at The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar\n49 Mt Auburn St\, Cambridge MA 02139\nMusic starts @ 6:30\nWednesday nights \n  \nWhat critics say about Barrett Anderson \nFrom Jay Clestowski\, Disciples of Sound: “Barrett Anderson continues to carry the torch that J. Geils left behind…  HypnoBoogie demonstrates that some of the best grooves come out of the ‘dirty water’ and that’s where they belong.” \nFrom JD Nash\, American Blues Scene: “This Bean Town foursome packs enough raw energy on stage to power the whole of New England.” \nFrom Chris Spector\, Midwest Record: “Anderson has the chops and spark to make a real statement his own way.  Hot stuff.” \nFrom Jay Miller\, The Patriot Ledger: “HypnoBoogie… is the kind of refreshingly vibrant\, genre-crossing album that is a throwback to the days when rock ‘n’ roll acknowledged its roots in blues\, but ventured wherever the spirit took it.” \nWhat critics say about The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar \nFrom Sheryl Julian\, Boston Globe: “Harvard Square’s Sea Hag is the little sister to Grendel’s Den…” \nFrom Kara Baskin\, Boston Globe: “The team behind Grendel’s Den in Harvard Square has opened Sea Hag\, replacing The Bouthouse.  Wash ashore for fish and chips\, Jamaican beef patties\, arancini\, crab dip\, raw bar delights\, and muffins…” \nFrom Boston Restaurant Talk: “The Sea Hag opens in the former Boathouse space in Harvard Square.” \nFrom Marc Levy and Rónán Fitzgerald: “Grendel’s Den owner Kari Kuelzer is expanding in Harvard Square\, taking over the Boathouse location to open The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar.” \nwww.barrettandersonband.com\nwww.seahag02138.com

SUMMARY:David Ramirez
DESCRIPTION:David Ramirez took a little time to get back to himself\, and now he’s dead set on making music for himself—for the sake of the music\, and nothing else. \n“I love all the records I’ve made in the past\,” says Ramirez. “But in making them\, there was always the thought in the back of my mind of where and what it could get me. I made both creative and business decisions with a goal in mind; a goal that often never came. This time it was all about just the joy of making it\, about having fun with it.” \nThe Austin\, TX-based singer-songwriter—whose career has seen six full-length studio albums\, three EPs\, countless collaborations\, and an illustrious supergroup project in Glorietta—spent a season of rest away from his focus on writing songs. In the wake of the end of a long relationship\, he wanted to prioritize processing his grief as a human\, not as an artist bleeding onto the page. \n“The last thing I wanted was to write a heartbreak record. So I stopped writing altogether\, and I just waited until I saw my heart start coming back to life. I wanted the next thing to be hopeful and sweet and beautiful—a testament to music and my love for it.” \nRamirez’s new record\, All the Not So Gentle Reminders\, is exactly what he was waiting for. The 12-song album is an expansive succession of dreamlike songs that indeed tell his stories—but more than anything\, lean into the possibilities of the trip that music can take us on. “I’ve been a songwriter for a long time. I love words and stories. But this was about music. I wanted the long musical intros and outros [as heard on “Dirty Martini\,” “Twin Sized Beds\,” “A Bigger World\,” and “Dreams Come True”] to contribute to the stories and be a part of them.”

DESCRIPTION:The Terroir Workshop by Grandes Pagos de España explores Spanish terroir in the context of history\, science\, geography\, language and people.  This workshop will be led by Spanish Wine Scholar and Commonwealth Wine School instructor\, Erika Frey.  Students will experience the “grand crus” of Spain through the wines and stories of the 31 members of Grandes Pagos d’ España. \nFounded in 2000\, Grandes Pagos d’ España is a non-profit association of 31 prestigious wineries dedicated to single-estate production across Spain. Membership in Grandes Pagos is based on rigorous selection criteria for viticulture and winemaking excellence on the level of a pago\, a delineated vineyard parcel that is the ultimate terroir designation in Spain. Grandes Pagos d’ España aims to defend the unique\, terroir-driven personality of single-estate wines\, to uphold and promote the ethos of Spanish winemaking\, and to make wines of excellence in harmony with the soil\, nature and climate of each vineyard. \nThe classes will run from 6:00 to 8:00pm ET Thursdays from July 16th through August 13th\, 2026.  \nDeadline to register for bundle deal: July 16

SUMMARY:Yotam Marom at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store welcomes Yotam Marom—leading activist\, organizer\, and co-founder of IfNotNow and the Wildfire Project—for a discussion of his debut book\, For Louder Days: Reaching Beyond a Politics of Powerlessness. He will be joined in conversation by Marshall Ganz—Rita E. Hauser Senior Lecturer in Leadership\, Organizing and Civil Society at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government\, and the author of People\, Power\, Change: Organizing for Democratic Renewal. \nAbout For Louder Days\nThe essential guide to establishing an effective opposition movement in the age of Trump\, from the leading activist and organizer. \nThere is no way to stop the descent into authoritarianism\, nor win a world in which all people can thrive\, without massive numbers of people organizing for social\, political\, and economic change. \nYet experienced movement leader Yotam Marom delivers a hard truth: progressive and left movements too often get in their own way. They can be ambivalent about power\, choosing insularity and purity over winning. This amounts to what Marom calls the “politics of powerlessness\,” which has kept movements small\, weak\, and defeated.

SUMMARY:The Howard Levy 4
DESCRIPTION:“fresh\, energetic\, spontaneous\, adventurous” \nThe Howard Levy 4 is a dynamic\, multi-styled band hailing from Chicago\, led by Grammy-Award winning diatonic harmonica master\, pianist and composer Howard Levy. Joining him are the incredibly virtuosic guitarist Chris Siebold\, the outstanding upright and electric bassist Joshua Ramos\, and the masterful Brazilian drummer Luiz Ewerling. This powerhouse ensemble delivers pure musical magic in a range of styles that includes Jazz\, Latin\, World Music\, and Blues. Besides several distinctively reworked American and Brazilian tunes\, the band has an astonishingly diverse repertoire of original compositions that combine and blend many cultures\, rhythms and genres\, creating a sonic experience that’s nothing short of extraordinary. \nA prolific recording artist\, Howard has released 17 albums under his own name and appeared on hundreds more. He is a founding member of Bela Fleck and The Flecktones and has performed and recorded with an incredibly diverse range of artists including Kenny Loggins\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Donald Fagen\, and Kurt Elling. The revolutionary technique that he developed on the diatonic harmonica transformed it into a fully chromatic instrument for the first time\, opening up possibilities for limitless musical exploration while still retaining the cry of the Blues. \nSounding like no other on stage\, Howard’s unparalleled harmonica playing and virtuosic\, lyrical pianism creates a 1-2 punch\, effortlessly alternating between instruments and sometimes blending the two in wild and unexpected ways. The Chicago Tribune says\, “As Art Tatum was to the piano\, so is Levy to the harmonica: a hyper-virtuoso whose feats can be admired and studied but never really replicated.” And Jazz Times notes\, “Although he cites McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock as influences\, Levy the pianist has a sunnier\, more ebullient style than either\, enlivened by an unfailing upward momentum…” \nChris\, house guitarist for A Prairie Home Companion\, has recorded and toured with some of Chicago’s most eclectic Jazz and fusion groups; Joshua\, who played five years with jazz legend Ramsey Lewis\, is one of the industry’s most in-demand bassists; Luiz\, whose Brazilian roots infuse the ensemble with rhythmic and compositional richness\, adds profound depth to the group’s sound. \nThe Howard Levy 4’s live performances are a feast for the intellect and the senses\, brimming with unbridled energy and artistic brilliance. Their EP\, “Live from Chicago”\, showcases their extraordinary ability to transcend musical genres and captivate audiences. Experience the artistry of The Howard Levy 4\, where every concert is a journey through boundless landscapes of musical expression.

SUMMARY:Twisted Teens
DESCRIPTION:Twisted Teens is a band from New Orleans. Most musicians make you choose between rock and roll; Twisted Teens would never do that. Their political platform is religious psychosis; their music opens a door to a new universe by shutting all other doors to all other possible universes. “Fans of Raw Power-era Stooges\, Eastern mysticism\, or the punk-to-country pipeline should tuck in” (Atwood Magazine). “Here to put some steel wool type hair on your chest. Gritty\, toothy lofi punk with some stoink on it” (Sims Harden).

Professing a longstanding interest in music\, Hinojosa began performing at an early age. She has released 16 albums between 1987 and 2024 in English and Spanish in a variety of musical genres such as folk\, country\, pop and Latino. Hinojosa’s interest in cultural diversity is a recurrent theme in both her work and her personal life\, and is expressed not only through her award-winning cross-cultural musical productions but also in her volunteer work with several humanitarian organizations and causes. \nTish left San Antonio in 1979\, moving to northern New Mexico where she honed her songwriting and singing skills and worked as back-up singer for country artist\, Michael Martin Murphey. She also lived for a period in Nashville\, Tennessee. During this time\, she worked as a demo singer for Mel Tillis’ publishing company. She eventually settled in Austin\, Texas in 1988 where she was welcomed by Austin’s vibrant live music scene. \nIn 1987 Hinojosa recorded her first self-released album\, “Taos To Tennessee”. After her move to Austin\, she was signed to A&M Records and released her first internationally acclaimed record “Homeland”. The song “Donde Voy” (Where I Go)\, earned quadruple platinum status in South Korea. In 1992\, she signed with Rounder records\, releasing five albums with that label. “Culture Swing” was named Folk Album of The Year by the National Association of Independent Record Distributers (NAIRD). “Cada Niño”\, a bilingual (Spanish-English) children’s record won the prestigious “Parent’s Choice Gold Award” in 1996. Other records on this label are “Frontejas” a collection of original and traditional Spanish language songs celebrating the Texas-Mexican border\, “Sign of Truth”\, and a live record\, “The Best of Tish Hinojosa Live”\, recorded at one of Austin’s premier listening rooms “The Cactus Café” on The University of Texas campus in 2002. \nIn between her time at A&M and Rounder Records\, Tish recorded with Austin based “Watermelon Records”\, releasing her popular Spanish language live record “Aquella Noche” (That Certain Night)\, and the Christmas themed “Memorabilia Navideña”\, re-released later in 2002 as “From Texas For a Christmas Night” on the New West record label. \nIn 1994\, Tish signed with Warner Brothers Records in Nashville and produced two albums alongside acclaimed producer Jim Ed Norman – “Destiny’s Gate” and the bilingual and all Spanish “Dreaming from The Labyrinth”/ “Soñar Del Laberinto”. In addition to an active recording and touring schedule\, Hinojosa appeared on multiple television broadcasts including the ABC TV special of the Alma Awards in which she was an honoree and performed duets with Dwight Yoakam and Kenny Loggins. Tish also performed at The White House by invitation of President and Mrs. Clinton. \nHinojosa was married to entertainment attorney Craig Barker from 1982 to 1999. Barker managed her career and filled in as bass player in her band. The couple have two children\, Adam Craig Barker\, born in Nashville in 1984\, and Maria Cristina Barker (Nina)\, born in Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, in 1987. Tish lived in Hamburg\, Germany\, from 2005-2013. While there\, she recorded three albums\, “A Heart Wide Open”\, “Our Little Planet”\, and “After the Fair”\, and continued touring throughout Europe and the U.S. \nIn 2018\, Tish recorded an album entitled “West”. Tish and her husband\, Lynn Nixon\, divide their time between Austin\, Texas\, and Tubac\, Arizona. She continues to write\, record and tour. She enjoys spending time with her large extended family in San Antonio\, with her children\, and five grandchildren. \nHinojosa continues to support Humanitarian\, Bilingual\, and cultural causes\, particularly Hispanic cultural causes through her performances and participation in school and cultural outreach programs.

Husky Höskulds (Norah Jones\, Tom Waits\, Mike Patton\, Solomon Burke\, Bettye LaVette\, Allen Toussaint)\, and mastered by Dave Cooley (Blood Orange\, M83\, DIIV\, Paramore\, Snail Mail\, clipping). Dream Hunting…also includes guest vocals from Steady Holiday’s Dre Babinski on “Future Peg” and “If Only\,” and Rebecca Black (singer of the viral pop hit\, “Friday”) on “On The Mend” and “Lonely Beuys.” The album follows the release of “Beached” and “Witch\,“ Man Man’s contributions to Vol. 4 of the Sub Pop Singles Club in 2019.\n m
