SUMMARY:Pınar Öğrenci: Glück auf in Deutschland (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:Reflect on memory\, labor\, and belonging in this first major U.S. exhibition by Pınar Öğrenci. \nGlück auf in Deutschland marks the first major exhibition in the United States by Berlin-based artist and filmmaker Pınar Öğrenci (b. 1973). The artist’s work invites viewers to question what has been remembered or erased while imagining a future grounded in justice\, equality\, and collective healing and shaped by layered experiences of survival\, resistance\, and resilience. \nThe exhibition includes Öğrenci’s 2024 film Glück auf in Deutschland (Good Luck in Germany)\, which addresses the construction of postwar German identity in the Ruhrgebiet\, a heavily industrialized region known for coal mining and steel production. Five related collages are also on view\, reimagining the bodies of workers and their families within the Ruhr landscape and its architecture. Öğrenci’s use of the phrase Glück auf — a common way that miners wish one another a safe return after their physically grueling and dangerous work underground — resonates with the experiences of immigrant communities in present-day Germany facing right-wing extremism. \nThe photographs in the film and collages were drawn largely from the Ruhr Museum archive in Essen\, Germany\, and include works by artists from the 1950s and ’60s. In her interventions\, Öğrenci reveals how photography helped shape a homogenous\, male-centered identity for both the region and the German nation; she seeks instead to present a more inclusive visual record. Öğrenci’s work is displayed alongside historical photographs from the Busch-Reisinger Museum’s collection. \nCurated by Lynette Roth\, Daimler Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum. \nThis exhibition is supported by the Charles Kuhn Endowment Fund in the Busch-Reisinger Museum. Modern and contemporary art programs at the Harvard Art Museums are made possible in part by generous support from the Emily Rauh Pulitzer and Joseph Pulitzer\, Jr.\, Fund for Modern and Contemporary Art.

SUMMARY:Chang-rae Lee at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store welcomes Chang-rae Lee—award-winning author of Native Speaker and The Surrendered—for a discussion of his new novel\, A Tender Age. He will be joined in conversation by Claire Messud—author of six works of fiction and the Joseph Y. Bae and Janice Lee Senior Lecturer on Fiction at Harvard University. \n\nAbout A Tender Age\nGuilt\, innocence\, and a boy on the cusp of adolescence. \nA spellbinding exploration of American masculinity and family dynamics as seen through the confused eyes of a prepubescent child of immigrants\, A Tender Age joins the rich tradition of the American bildungsroman. The natural descendent of characters like Huckleberry Finn and Holden Caufield\, Korean-American Jeon-Gi is torn between competing ideas of himself. At home\, his working-class parents dote on him. Outside\, he is part of a roving pack of kids with dominion over a derelict baseball field\, weedy parking lot\, and rusty jungle gym. Getting into and out of trouble is all-consuming. But the summer he turns eleven\, he becomes embroiled in a staggering series of events reverberating far beyond himself and his family. \nDevastating in its emotional precision\, A Tender Age captures a family and community in striking distance of the American dream\, and a young person on the precipice of adult knowledge\, looking at his own culpability and looking away—then thinking about it for the rest of his life.

SUMMARY:Live Blues & Roots Music Returns to Harvard Square: Wednesday Nights @ The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar
DESCRIPTION:The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar and The Barrett Anderson Band are excited to announce a new weekly series\, Blues & Roots Wednesdays\, bringing live music back home to historic Harvard Square. \n“Cambridge\, our fair city\, and I share deep roots\, and I’m thrilled to find a new musical home at The Sea Hag\,” says Massachusetts-based singer/guitarist\, Barrett Anderson.  “Good music and good food are two of our most basic\, fundamental needs\,” he continues\, “What great joy they give us.  I am so happy to revel in that every Wednesday night with my dearest musical friends\, and Kari and her incredible team at The Sea Hag.  We go way back together\, and I can’t imagine all the fun we have ahead.” \nIndeed\, Anderson has strong connections to this scene.  He remembers: “My first professional experience came when I was 15\, backing up Muddy Waters’ band alums Pinetop Perkins and Bob Margolin at the original House of Blues on Winthrop Street.  A few months after that I began busking\, you’d often find me in Brattle Square or by the pit.  This would have been mid/late 90s.”  While still a teen\, Anderson was a member of The Monster Mike Welch Band and Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters (“Ronnie was my guitar hero.  Then he was my teacher\, then my boss.  Now he’s my musical Father\,” Anderson says)\, before eventually starting The Barrett Anderson Band in 2007. \nAnderson won a Boston Music Award (2013 Blues Artist of the Year)\, was on the Billboard charts (2020’s live album Hynoboogie spent 3 weeks on the Billboard Blues Album chart\, peaking at #6)\, and was nominated for a Blues Music Award (2023 Band of the Year with Anthony Geraci & The Boston Blues All-Stars)\, all the while playing nationally\, internationally\, and locally in Cambridge and the greater Boston area. \nIn addition to the musical roots\, long-time locals may recognize Anderson from a decade serving tables and bartending at The Sea Hag’s sister establishment\, Grendel’s Den\, or from Abodeon\, the mid-century modern shop started by his family. \nMusic starts every Wednesday at 6:30 at The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar\, 49 Mt Auburn St\, and there’s no cover.  “We start while people are dining\,” Anderson states.  “It forces us to play dynamically\, dig deep\, and explore the space\, creating music that doesn’t demand attention but rewards it.”  He adds with a grin “We do get to turn up and demand attention too\, we just have to time it right.” \nJoining Anderson (vocals and guitar) are Paul Loranger (upright and electric bass)\, and Joey Pafumi (drums and percussion).  “This is the core of The Barrett Anderson Band\,” Anderson explains.  “The full band has wonderful additional musicians\, but for this gig tight and light was right.  This gives us the flexibility to learn material fast and improvise easily on the spot\, allowing for regular guests and specially themed evenings.  We’re making sure that each week is rewarding and unique.” \nThe Barrett Anderson Band are digging deep into their Cambridge roots for the first string of shows\, featuring local roots rock king Dennis Brennan as a special guest. \nBlues & Roots Wednesdays at The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar\n49 Mt Auburn St\, Cambridge MA 02139\nMusic starts @ 6:30\nWednesday nights \n  \nWhat critics say about Barrett Anderson \nFrom Jay Clestowski\, Disciples of Sound: “Barrett Anderson continues to carry the torch that J. Geils left behind…  HypnoBoogie demonstrates that some of the best grooves come out of the ‘dirty water’ and that’s where they belong.” \nFrom JD Nash\, American Blues Scene: “This Bean Town foursome packs enough raw energy on stage to power the whole of New England.” \nFrom Chris Spector\, Midwest Record: “Anderson has the chops and spark to make a real statement his own way.  Hot stuff.” \nFrom Jay Miller\, The Patriot Ledger: “HypnoBoogie… is the kind of refreshingly vibrant\, genre-crossing album that is a throwback to the days when rock ‘n’ roll acknowledged its roots in blues\, but ventured wherever the spirit took it.” \nWhat critics say about The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar \nFrom Sheryl Julian\, Boston Globe: “Harvard Square’s Sea Hag is the little sister to Grendel’s Den…” \nFrom Kara Baskin\, Boston Globe: “The team behind Grendel’s Den in Harvard Square has opened Sea Hag\, replacing The Bouthouse.  Wash ashore for fish and chips\, Jamaican beef patties\, arancini\, crab dip\, raw bar delights\, and muffins…” \nFrom Boston Restaurant Talk: “The Sea Hag opens in the former Boathouse space in Harvard Square.” \nFrom Marc Levy and Rónán Fitzgerald: “Grendel’s Den owner Kari Kuelzer is expanding in Harvard Square\, taking over the Boathouse location to open The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar.” \nwww.barrettandersonband.com\nwww.seahag02138.com

SUMMARY:The Faux Paws
DESCRIPTION:The Faux Paws have a problem. They’re a triangle band in a land of circles. Musically impossible to describe\, they don’t even fit into todays often hyphenated-genre world. No fan\, industry expert\, nor member of the band can seem to sum up this band’s sound in any kind of marketable way. They continue to remain a singularly unique outfit in the acoustic music community\, always on the fringes\, always memorable and with an increasing number of die-hard fans who feel like they’ve uncovered a secret. \nIs it bluegrass? Not usually. Old-time? Occasionally. Is it Celtic? Can’t quite say that. Is it Folk? Americana? Jazz? Singer-songwriter? None of the above\, but members of the Paws have deep ties to all of these traditions and blend their elements effortlessly to serve whatever musical idea is being presented. So what can we say? This band takes risks. They’re dynamic\, exciting\, sincere\, irreverent\, infectious\, and surprising. They move deftly between moods\, influences and instruments but always maintaining a “groove” that pulses through the music like a heartbeat (you may not always be aware it’s there but it gives the thing life). \nA Faux Paws live show is an explosive roller coaster ride that brings the audience along. Virtuosity on the fiddle\, mandolin\, guitar and saxophone\, sure\, but also vulnerability\, personal lyrics\, tight 3-part brother harmonies\, playful interplay\, intricately arranged details and soaring improvisations. With the considerable success and praise the band has seen since coming out of the pandemic the Paws decided to add long-time friend and collaborator Zoe Guigueno (Fish & Bird\, Della Mae) to their touring outfit on upright bass whenever possible. Zoe only deepens the group’s already massive sound while freeing each member up for more creative expression on their various instruments.

SUMMARY:HAYLA
DESCRIPTION:HAYLA has delivered her majestic\, powerful voice all throughout the world of music. Growing up in Liverpool and immersed in sound from an early age\, her relationship with music feels instinctive rather than deliberate. One of her earliest and most formative influences was Whitney Houston’s Bodyguard album\, a record that left a lasting emotional imprint and set the tone for her deep connection to vocal expression and feeling-led music. From performing in bands around the UK and teaching singing lessons\, to taking the stage at the Hollywood Bowl with deadmau5 and closing out Coachella\, HAYLA’s journey has been one of quiet\, unstoppable momentum. \nShe is now one of electronic music’s most recognisable and in-demand voices. Her GRAMMY nomination came via “Escape\,” her collaboration on deadmau5 and Kaskade’s celebrated LP Kx5\, and she became a Gold-certified artist through “Where You Are\,” her smash co-write with John Summit. Both tracks alongside Summit collaboration “Shiver” reached #1 on SiriusXM’s BPM\, giving her the top song three years running. She has since added further Dance Radio #1s to her name: “Without You” with Kygo\, “Another World” with MEDUZA\, and the operatic “In My Arms” with ILLENIUM\, which features on his #1 Billboard Dance Album chart project ODYSSEY alongside collaborations with Ellie Goulding and Ryan Tedder. Her collaboration with multi-platinum pop icon Nelly Furtado\, “FADED” released via Casablanca Records is a haunting\, cinematic dancefloor anthem that melds electronic atmosphere with emotional storytelling\, and earned HAYLA a nomination for Best Collaboration at the Electronic Dance Music Awards (EDMAs). \nAs a solo artist\, HAYLA released her debut album DUSK (Restless Minds Music/Believe UK)\, earning a cover slot on Spotify’s Mint playlist and a “Hottest Record” accolade on BBC Radio 1. Among its standout singles\, “Visions Of You” reached #2 on Mediabase’s Most Played chart at dance radio in 2025 and broke into the top 10 on Billboard Dance Airplay a landmark moment for HAYLA as a solo artist in her own right and commands over 6.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify. \nIn late 2025\, HAYLA embarked on a headline North American tour\, following a landmark summer that included debut appearances at major PRIDE festivals across the U.S.\, two solo sets opening for Kygo at Ushuaïa Ibiza\, and support slots at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The tour culminated in sold-out shows at iconic venues including El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles and appearances at major festivals including ILLENIUM’s Ember Shores. \nNow\, HAYLA enters an exciting new chapter. She is nominated across multiple prestigious awards in early 2026: an iHeartRadio Music Award for “In My Arms” in the Dance Song of the Year category and four EDMAs including Female Artist of the Year\, Vocalist of the Year\, Dance Radio Artist of the Year\, and Best Collaboration. She won a Femmy Award for Best Vocalist at Miami Music WeekShe and is also set to make her solo debut on the main stage at EDC Las Vegas in May 2026\, having already appeared on the EDC Mexico main stage. \nOn the 18th March\, HAYLA took to the stage at St Pancras Church in London for an exclusive show performing entirely new music from her upcoming album\, a bold statement of intent and a clear signal of her musical evolution. \nThat album represents HAYLA’s most personal and ambitious work to date\, one that draws from a wide and unconventional palette: progressive metal\, electronic music\, melancholy singer-songwriter traditions\, and atmospheric storytelling. Influences range from Chelsea Wolfe\, Deftones\, and Nick Drake to classical and jazz. The album was not planned or over-produced\, it “just happened\,” guided by atmosphere and emotion rather than genre or trend. \nHAYLA describes her sound as “sad bitch music”: emotionally heavy yet hopeful\, melancholic but empowering. Themes of loss\, love\, grief\, and resilience run throughout. Rather than offering answers\, the music holds space allowing listeners to find their own meaning. New single “Heal” was released on 10th March. The message at the heart of it all is simple but powerful: you are not alone.

SUMMARY:Center Mid
DESCRIPTION:Center Mid is the folk-rock brainchild of lifelong friends Stephen Higgins (vocals\, guitar)\, Scott Kaplan (guitar)\, and Matt Lowerre (banjo). After years of backyard jams in the suburbs of Boston\, Steve relocated to Boulder\, Matt set up shop in LA\, while Scott stayed true to his New England roots with a move to Cambridge\, MA. Despite their individual careers outside of music\, the songwriting never stopped\, and the trio soon discovered that their sound wasn’t born solely from their extensive shared history\, but also the half-decade they’ve spent living apart. \nEncouraged by an incredible response to teasers on social media\, Center Mid released its debut single\, “Cross Country Blues (demo)\,” on 5/15/26. The track has racked up nearly 1 million streams since its release\, and the band has turned its focus towards more releases and a slew of unannounced tour dates later this year.
