SUMMARY:Pınar Öğrenci: Glück auf in Deutschland (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:Reflect on memory\, labor\, and belonging in this first major U.S. exhibition by Pınar Öğrenci. \nGlück auf in Deutschland marks the first major exhibition in the United States by Berlin-based artist and filmmaker Pınar Öğrenci (b. 1973). The artist’s work invites viewers to question what has been remembered or erased while imagining a future grounded in justice\, equality\, and collective healing and shaped by layered experiences of survival\, resistance\, and resilience. \nThe exhibition includes Öğrenci’s 2024 film Glück auf in Deutschland (Good Luck in Germany)\, which addresses the construction of postwar German identity in the Ruhrgebiet\, a heavily industrialized region known for coal mining and steel production. Five related collages are also on view\, reimagining the bodies of workers and their families within the Ruhr landscape and its architecture. Öğrenci’s use of the phrase Glück auf — a common way that miners wish one another a safe return after their physically grueling and dangerous work underground — resonates with the experiences of immigrant communities in present-day Germany facing right-wing extremism. \nThe photographs in the film and collages were drawn largely from the Ruhr Museum archive in Essen\, Germany\, and include works by artists from the 1950s and ’60s. In her interventions\, Öğrenci reveals how photography helped shape a homogenous\, male-centered identity for both the region and the German nation; she seeks instead to present a more inclusive visual record. Öğrenci’s work is displayed alongside historical photographs from the Busch-Reisinger Museum’s collection. \nCurated by Lynette Roth\, Daimler Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum. \nThis exhibition is supported by the Charles Kuhn Endowment Fund in the Busch-Reisinger Museum. Modern and contemporary art programs at the Harvard Art Museums are made possible in part by generous support from the Emily Rauh Pulitzer and Joseph Pulitzer\, Jr.\, Fund for Modern and Contemporary Art.

SUMMARY:Lovepop Sets Out to Build the Largest Retail Kindness Wall Ever
DESCRIPTION:What if a simple handwritten note could change someone’s day—or even their life? This April\, Lovepop invites the community to experience exactly that with the launch of the Harvard Square Kindness Wall\, a living\, evolving installation designed to spark connection\, reflection\, and small but meaningful moments of kindness. Launching on April 28 (Pay It Forward Day) at Lovepop’s Harvard Square store\, the Kindness Wall will invite visitors to leave or take handwritten notes—messages of encouragement\, gratitude\, or support—creating a shared space where words have the power to uplift strangers and bring people together. At its heart\, the Kindness Wall reflects Lovepop’s belief that love is the foundation for a brighter world—and that it grows when it is shared. Known for its intricate 3D paper sculptures\, Lovepop blends art and engineering through its signature Slicegami™ technique\, transforming paper into magical cards and gifts designed to surprise\, delight\, and bring people closer together. This installation brings that same spirit off the card and into a shared\, real-world experience. “We’ve always believed that a small gesture can have a big impact\,” said Todd McKay\, Manager\, Lovepop Harvard Square. “The Kindness Wall is about creating space for those moments—where someone can give a little encouragement or receive exactly the words they didn’t know they needed.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Community-Powered Experience\nThe week of April 20th leading up to the launch\, Lovepop is partnering with local schools\, nonprofits\, and community organizations to help “pre-seed” the wall with hundreds of notes—ensuring it begins as a vibrant\, living reflection of the community it serves. Once launched\, the installation will continue to grow organically over a three-month period\, with visitors invited to contribute\, engage\, and return—each visit offering a new opportunity for connection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCollaboration with Random Note Project\nLovepop is proud to collaborate with Random Note Project\, a global initiative dedicated to spreading kindness through handwritten notes left for strangers. Now celebrating its 25th year\, Random Note Project has inspired countless moments of unexpected connection around the world. \nFounder Gabrielle Bovard will join Lovepop in bringing the Kindness Wall to life\, helping shape elements of the experience and participating in launch activities. \n“At its core\, this is about human connection\,” said Bovard. “A simple note can remind someone they’re seen\, valued\, and not alone. What Lovepop is creating\nwith the Kindness Wall is a beautiful extension of that idea—inviting an entire community to take part.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Keepsakes to Shared Moments\nFor Lovepop\, known for transforming paper into memorable keepsakes through intricate engineering and design\, the Kindness Wall represents a natural evolution—turning individual moments of connection into a shared\, collective experience. \nVisitors are encouraged to:\n● Leave a note for someone they may never meet\n● Take a note that resonates with them\n● Return to see how the wall grows and evolves over time \nWhether it’s a message of hope\, a reflection\, or a few simple words of encouragement\, each note becomes part of something bigger—a reminder that even small acts of kindness can ripple outward. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit and Participate\nLovepop is setting out to build the largest retail kindness wall ever\, with a goal of collecting more than 5\,000 handwritten notes from the community over the course of the installation. Visitors are invited to help bring the wall to life—one message at a time The Harvard Square Kindness Wall will be open to the public beginning April 28 at Lovepop Harvard Square and will remain active for approximately three months. \nThose unable to visit in person are encouraged to participate in the spirit of the project through the Random Note Project by sharing messages of kindness in their own communities. \n\n\nAbout Lovepop\nLovepop is a Boston-based company that blends maritime engineering with the Japanese art of kirigami to create intricate\, 3D pop-up cards and paper art. Using its signature Slicegami™ technique\, Lovepop designs complex structures on ship-modeling software\, laser-cuts them for precision\, and hand-assembles each piece—transforming paper into unexpected\, magical experiences. \nLovepop believes that love is the foundation for a brighter world—and that it grows when it is shared. Every day\, Lovepop pours its heart into developing creative\, meaningful\, and fun ways for people to share love with those around them. \nBy combining art and engineering\, Lovepop stretches the boundaries of imagination to create magical cards and gifts that bring people together. Beyond its signature greeting cards—featured on Shark Tank—Lovepop also offers large-scale paper flower bouquets and licensed designs from brands like Disney and Marvel\, turning traditional stationery into “gifts in an envelope.”

SUMMARY:Whose Genes? What Genes Can (and Can’t) Explain About Life
DESCRIPTION:Free Hybrid Lecture\nLocation: Geological Lecture Hall\, 24 Oxford Street\, Cambridge\, MA 02138 \nSpeakers:\nDaniel Faccini\, PhD Candidate\, Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology\, Harvard University \nNeil S. Greenspan\, Professor Emeritus of Pathology\, Case Western Reserve University; a Senior Editor\, Pathogens and Immunity \nJulius Tabin\, PhD Candidate\, Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology\, Harvard University \nWhat exactly is a gene? What can genes really tell us about the evolution of life and human beings? These are some of the questions behind Whose Genes?–a project funded by the Harvard President’s Building Bridges Fund. Drawing on interviews with Harvard faculty and questions gathered from the broader community\, the project explores both shared ground and points of debate in contemporary genetics\, bringing together diverse perspectives on one of biology’s most enduring and contested questions: How do genes shape organisms\, identities\, and evolution? Join us for a public conversation around this question. Audience members are invited to complete this short anonymous survey in advance and to bring their own questions about evolution\, inheritance\, and the limits of genetic explanations. \nAdvance registration is recommended. \nRegister for In-Person \nRegister for Online \nFree parking is available at the 52 Oxford Street Garage starting at 5 pm. \nPresented by the Harvard Museum of Natural History\, one of the Harvard Museums of Science & Culture\, with support from the Harvard President’s Building Bridges Fund\, and the Herman and Joan Suit Lecture Fund. \nAbout the Speakers\nDaniel Faccini is a Ph.D student in the Friedman Lab of the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. Fascinated with the morphological evolution of plants\, he studies plants from an organismal perspective\, integrating developmental\, morphological\, biogeographical\, and ecological patterns to understand their extraordinary diversity. His current research focuses on the evolution of a diverse plant genus in the Canary Islands. \nNeil S. Greenspan is an immunologist and clinical pathologist. After studying biochemical sciences at Harvard University\, he received an MD and PhD (in immunology) from the University of Pennsylvania and pursued post-graduate training in clinical pathology and molecular immunology at Barnes Hospital and Washington University. After joining the Case Western Reserve University (Case) School of Medicine faculty in 1986\, Greenspan studied immunity to bacterial pathogens along with vaccine design\, probed connections between antibody structure and function\, investigated autoimmunity in a mouse model of lupus\, explored conceptual implications of evolution for understanding immunology and related fields\, and directed the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory of what is now University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center for about 38 years. He also taught immunology and related fields to medical students\, graduate students\, undergraduates (less frequently)\, pathology residents\, and transplant-related clinical fellows. He has published over 100 articles listed on PubMed\, over 100 academically oriented commentaries\, and about 25 opinion pieces on a variety of topics for broader audiences. He is a senior editor of Pathogens and Immunity (P&I). In 2021\, he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. \nJulius Tabin is a PhD student in the Elya Lab of the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He is broadly interested in behavioral genetics. In the past\, he has studied a variety of organisms\, including cavefish\, zebrafish\, catsharks\, gars\, skates\, big cats\, and deer mice. He is currently conducting research on “zombie flies.” When infected with the fungus Entomophthora muscae\, these flies are compelled to climb to high locations before dying. Tabin works on understanding the molecular and mechanistic basis of this parasite-induced phenomenon.

SUMMARY:Live Blues & Roots Music Returns to Harvard Square: Wednesday Nights @ The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar
DESCRIPTION:The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar and The Barrett Anderson Band are excited to announce a new weekly series\, Blues & Roots Wednesdays\, bringing live music back home to historic Harvard Square. \n“Cambridge\, our fair city\, and I share deep roots\, and I’m thrilled to find a new musical home at The Sea Hag\,” says Massachusetts-based singer/guitarist\, Barrett Anderson.  “Good music and good food are two of our most basic\, fundamental needs\,” he continues\, “What great joy they give us.  I am so happy to revel in that every Wednesday night with my dearest musical friends\, and Kari and her incredible team at The Sea Hag.  We go way back together\, and I can’t imagine all the fun we have ahead.” \nIndeed\, Anderson has strong connections to this scene.  He remembers: “My first professional experience came when I was 15\, backing up Muddy Waters’ band alums Pinetop Perkins and Bob Margolin at the original House of Blues on Winthrop Street.  A few months after that I began busking\, you’d often find me in Brattle Square or by the pit.  This would have been mid/late 90s.”  While still a teen\, Anderson was a member of The Monster Mike Welch Band and Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters (“Ronnie was my guitar hero.  Then he was my teacher\, then my boss.  Now he’s my musical Father\,” Anderson says)\, before eventually starting The Barrett Anderson Band in 2007. \nAnderson won a Boston Music Award (2013 Blues Artist of the Year)\, was on the Billboard charts (2020’s live album Hynoboogie spent 3 weeks on the Billboard Blues Album chart\, peaking at #6)\, and was nominated for a Blues Music Award (2023 Band of the Year with Anthony Geraci & The Boston Blues All-Stars)\, all the while playing nationally\, internationally\, and locally in Cambridge and the greater Boston area. \nIn addition to the musical roots\, long-time locals may recognize Anderson from a decade serving tables and bartending at The Sea Hag’s sister establishment\, Grendel’s Den\, or from Abodeon\, the mid-century modern shop started by his family. \nMusic starts every Wednesday at 6:30 at The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar\, 49 Mt Auburn St\, and there’s no cover.  “We start while people are dining\,” Anderson states.  “It forces us to play dynamically\, dig deep\, and explore the space\, creating music that doesn’t demand attention but rewards it.”  He adds with a grin “We do get to turn up and demand attention too\, we just have to time it right.” \nJoining Anderson (vocals and guitar) are Paul Loranger (upright and electric bass)\, and Joey Pafumi (drums and percussion).  “This is the core of The Barrett Anderson Band\,” Anderson explains.  “The full band has wonderful additional musicians\, but for this gig tight and light was right.  This gives us the flexibility to learn material fast and improvise easily on the spot\, allowing for regular guests and specially themed evenings.  We’re making sure that each week is rewarding and unique.” \nThe Barrett Anderson Band are digging deep into their Cambridge roots for the first string of shows\, featuring local roots rock king Dennis Brennan as a special guest. \nBlues & Roots Wednesdays at The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar\n49 Mt Auburn St\, Cambridge MA 02139\nMusic starts @ 6:30\nWednesday nights \n  \nWhat critics say about Barrett Anderson \nFrom Jay Clestowski\, Disciples of Sound: “Barrett Anderson continues to carry the torch that J. Geils left behind…  HypnoBoogie demonstrates that some of the best grooves come out of the ‘dirty water’ and that’s where they belong.” \nFrom JD Nash\, American Blues Scene: “This Bean Town foursome packs enough raw energy on stage to power the whole of New England.” \nFrom Chris Spector\, Midwest Record: “Anderson has the chops and spark to make a real statement his own way.  Hot stuff.” \nFrom Jay Miller\, The Patriot Ledger: “HypnoBoogie… is the kind of refreshingly vibrant\, genre-crossing album that is a throwback to the days when rock ‘n’ roll acknowledged its roots in blues\, but ventured wherever the spirit took it.” \nWhat critics say about The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar \nFrom Sheryl Julian\, Boston Globe: “Harvard Square’s Sea Hag is the little sister to Grendel’s Den…” \nFrom Kara Baskin\, Boston Globe: “The team behind Grendel’s Den in Harvard Square has opened Sea Hag\, replacing The Bouthouse.  Wash ashore for fish and chips\, Jamaican beef patties\, arancini\, crab dip\, raw bar delights\, and muffins…” \nFrom Boston Restaurant Talk: “The Sea Hag opens in the former Boathouse space in Harvard Square.” \nFrom Marc Levy and Rónán Fitzgerald: “Grendel’s Den owner Kari Kuelzer is expanding in Harvard Square\, taking over the Boathouse location to open The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar.” \nwww.barrettandersonband.com\nwww.seahag02138.com

SUMMARY:From SPAM™ to K-Pop: The Korean War and the Rise of Modern South Korea
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: \n\n\nSean C. Kim\, Professor of History\, University of Central Missouri \n\n\nIlisa Barbash\, Curator of Visual Anthropology\, Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology\, Harvard University \n\n\nSouth Korea has recently jumped onto the global stage through its economic rise and export of popular culture. Drawing on their new book\, The Forgotten Home Front: Roger Marshutz’s Photographs of Pusan\, South Korea\, 1952–1954 (Peabody Museum Press and KMEC Books\, 2026)\, coauthors Lisa Barbash and Sean Kim will visually explore a key moment of transition in the development of South Korea: the Korean War (1950–1953). This conflict ruptured Korea’s traditional and colonial past and ushered in new political\, economic\, and cultural opportunities—under American influence—that have shaped modern South Korea. By examining this moment of change through photography\, the lecture illuminates South Korea’s rise from a war-torn peninsula to an economic powerhouse and global cultural trendsetter. \nCopies of The Forgotten Home Front will be available for purchase and signing following the program. \nAdvance registration recommended for online and in-person attendance.

SUMMARY:Billy Hart Quartet featuring Ethan Iverson\, Ben Street and Nicole Glover
DESCRIPTION:NEA jazz master Billy Hart is one of the most sought-after jazz drummers of his generation\, able to perform in diverse contexts ranging from straight-ahead to avant-garde to pop. He appears on more than 600 recordings\, including five with his critically-acclaimed quartet\, the most recent being Multidirectional on Smoke Sessions. \nHart grew up in the nation’s capital in a music-loving family who introduced him to jazz early on. His maternal grandmother bought him his first drum set. At age 17\, he was hired by the great local saxophonist Buck Hill for an extended gig with his band\, which also featured two of Hart’s high school classmates\, pianist Reuben Brown and bassist Butch Warren. His next important mentor was singer and pianist Shirley Horn. After being established locally\, Hart spent most of the 60s touring with three of the preeminent working groups of the era\, Jimmy Smith\, Wes Montgomery\, and Eddie Harris. \nAfter moving to New York\, Hart became associated with a group of like-minded and forward thinking musicians\, recording with Pharaoh Sanders\, Wayne Shorter\, McCoy Tyner\, Joe Zawinul\, and\, especially\, Herbie Hancock\, with whom Hart spent three productive years in the band now known as Mwandishi. He also appeared on the seminal Miles Davis 1972 album On the Corner. \nOther notable associations include four years with Stan Getz\, almost ten years with Charles Lloyd\, and record dates ranging from standard bearers like Frank Foster\, Clark Terry\, Horace Silver to experimentalists like Joanne Brackeen\, Geri Allen\, and James Newton. Notable cooperatives with Hart include Quest and The Cookers\, and he released a memoir\, Oceans of Time\, in 2025.

SUMMARY:Gallery Performance: Celtic Art Across the Ages
DESCRIPTION:Listen to stories from ancient texts\, read in Latin and in English translation\, about Celtic people as seen through Roman eyes. \nIn celebration of the special exhibition Celtic Art Across the Ages\, Harvard student Ian Wilson will share favorite readings from Roman historians about Celtic peoples\, first in Latin and then in English translation. Focusing on writing by Livy and Caesar\, Wilson will show how these stories illuminate stereotypes of people living to the north.
