In Jacques Demy’s operetta, THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG, a beautiful young woman (Deneuve) falls for a mechanic (Castelnuovo) and promises to wait for him when he is called off to war… but can their love endure? In Wim Wenders’ haunting WINGS OF DESIRE, an angel (Ganz) fated to silently observe the living becomes enamored with a lonely trapeze artist (Dommartin) and allows himself to fall to Earth simply to be able to approach her.
