SUMMARY:Pınar Öğrenci: Glück auf in Deutschland (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:Reflect on memory\, labor\, and belonging in this first major U.S. exhibition by Pınar Öğrenci. \nGlück auf in Deutschland marks the first major exhibition in the United States by Berlin-based artist and filmmaker Pınar Öğrenci (b. 1973). The artist’s work invites viewers to question what has been remembered or erased while imagining a future grounded in justice\, equality\, and collective healing and shaped by layered experiences of survival\, resistance\, and resilience. \nThe exhibition includes Öğrenci’s 2024 film Glück auf in Deutschland (Good Luck in Germany)\, which addresses the construction of postwar German identity in the Ruhrgebiet\, a heavily industrialized region known for coal mining and steel production. Five related collages are also on view\, reimagining the bodies of workers and their families within the Ruhr landscape and its architecture. Öğrenci’s use of the phrase Glück auf — a common way that miners wish one another a safe return after their physically grueling and dangerous work underground — resonates with the experiences of immigrant communities in present-day Germany facing right-wing extremism. \nThe photographs in the film and collages were drawn largely from the Ruhr Museum archive in Essen\, Germany\, and include works by artists from the 1950s and ’60s. In her interventions\, Öğrenci reveals how photography helped shape a homogenous\, male-centered identity for both the region and the German nation; she seeks instead to present a more inclusive visual record. Öğrenci’s work is displayed alongside historical photographs from the Busch-Reisinger Museum’s collection. \nCurated by Lynette Roth\, Daimler Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum. \nThis exhibition is supported by the Charles Kuhn Endowment Fund in the Busch-Reisinger Museum. Modern and contemporary art programs at the Harvard Art Museums are made possible in part by generous support from the Emily Rauh Pulitzer and Joseph Pulitzer\, Jr.\, Fund for Modern and Contemporary Art.

SUMMARY:Josiah Reibstein & The Hubtones – in the performance space
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE ARTIST\nWhen’s the last time you sidled up to the bell of a tuba and let its warm\, rich\, funky sound envelope you as it filled the room? Now layer in some spitfire New Orleans trumpet and serpentine clarinet lines\, and you’ve got a sound that helped define American music—and still gets people smiling\, laughing and dancing. \nJosiah Reibstein & The Hubtones tap into that iconic sound with some of Boston’s finest traditional jazz musicians\, delivering swinging\, high-energy sets rooted in New Orleans-style jazz. With playful arrangements and a repertoire of classics and clever surprises\, the Hubtones serve up “trad jazz” that’s brassy\, bawdy and fun.

SUMMARY:Maria Tatar at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store\, the Harvard University Division of Science\, and the Harvard Library welcome Maria Tatar—John L. Loeb Research Professor of Folklore and Mythology and Germanic Languages and Literatures\, Emerita\, at Harvard University—for a discussion of her book\, Arachnomania: Spiders and the Cultural Work They Do For Us. She will be joined in conversation by Charlie Tyson—Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows and regular contributor to The New Yorker\, The Baffler\, and The Atlantic. \nAbout Arachnomania\nIn praise of spiders in all their inspirational glory.  \nSpiders are often found lurking in dusty corners\, where we can observe them with interest or brush them away with disgust—or make a run for it\, as the agitated Miss Muffet does. They are just as prevalent in our cultural landscapes\, starring in horror films\, inspiring works by famous artists and writers\, and featured in myths and folktales. In Arachnomania\, Maria Tatar explores how these creatures became our totem animals\, our significant others\, and our curved mirrors. Spiders model engineering genius in the construction of webs that have become powerful metaphors for drawing us out of our social isolation and connecting us in a fragile ecosystem. But these arachnids are also solitary in their habits and savage in their survival tactics. Spiders combine horror and beauty\, and that may explain why we endow them with symbolic cultural weight. \nTatar invites us to acknowledge our collective arachnophobia yet also embrace arachnophilia and celebrate spiders for their cultural benefits and real-world merits. Spiders have been portrayed as the kindred spirits of femmes fatales and spinster sleuths. They have operated as proxies for our fear of nuclear annihilation but appear also in the form of benevolent gods and\, in E. B. White’s Charlotte’s Web\, as a heroic barnyard savior. Spiders\, Tatar reminds us\, enable us to sustain our way of life on earth even as they continue to scare the living daylights out of us. With Arachnomania\, Tatar offers up an anthem to the humble creatures that haunt our imaginations\, reminding us of just how much we are the kindred spirits of the arachnids we should think of as “some spiders.”

SUMMARY:BLACK SWAN
DESCRIPTION:Tony Award winner Sonya Tayeh (Gatsby at A.R.T.\, Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Broadway) returns to the A.R.T. to bring the Academy Award-nominated psychological thriller Black Swan to the stage. Pressure builds\, boundaries blur\, and reality begins to slip as Nina strives to rise from the ballet corps to the lead role in Swan Lake. This bold new musical adaptation is a haunting exploration of ambition\, power\, and the cost of perfection. \nPerformed with Tayeh’s high-octane\, genre-breaking choreography\, Black Swan features a contemporary book by Guggenheim Fellow Jen Silverman and a score by Obie Award winner Dave Malloy that blends the melodies of Tchaikovsky with a throbbing electronic soundscape. \nBlack Swan is presented by special arrangement with Buena Vista Theatrical. \nRecommended for ages 14+.

SUMMARY:BIRDING\, A CULTURE IN FLIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Everyone notices birds. But how many of us are birders? \nThere is a difference\, and it comes with its own language. Lifers and listers. Twitchers and stringers. Spark birds and nemesis birds. Birding is a subculture with its own rules\, its own ethics\, and its own obsessions\, and right now\, it is one of the fastest-growing communities in America. \n  \nSomething unexpected is fueling this growth. Technology. The same force often blamed for pulling us indoors has become an unlikely ally. Platforms that track sightings\, map migrations\, and connect birders across the world\, are transforming a solitary pastime into a global community. And they are raising new questions about ethics\, competition\, and what it means to love birds responsibly. \n  \nScientists are also paying attention. What birding does to the brain\, who is joining the community and why\, and what this ancient practice of patient attention offers a generation raised on overstimulation. These are open questions\, and the answers are only beginning to emerge. \n  \nJoin John W. Fitzpatrick\, Director Emeritus of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, and Erik Wing\, neuroscientist at York University\, for a conversation about birds\, brains\, and a culture in flight. \n  \nJoin the conversation. \n  \n \nJohn Fitzpatrick is the Director Emeritus\, Cornell Lab of Ornithology. \nJohn Fitzpatrick served as Executive Director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology from 1995 to 2021\, where he also held a professorship in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He holds a B.A. from Harvard and a Ph.D. from Princeton\, and his research has long focused on bird ecology and conservation\, including ongoing work on the Florida Scrub-Jay. A lifelong birder since childhood\, he is also an occasional bird painter. \n \nErik Wing is a research associate at York University and Baycrest Hospital in Toronto\, where he studies how prior knowledge and expertise shape human perception and cognition. He completed his doctoral work at Duke University focusing on brain representations during visual experience and memory retrieval. Working with birders across North America\, he has explored how learning bird identification shapes attention\, memory\, and new learning through behavioral and brain imaging research.

SUMMARY:Live Blues & Roots Music Returns to Harvard Square: Wednesday Nights @ The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar
DESCRIPTION:The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar and The Barrett Anderson Band are excited to announce a new weekly series\, Blues & Roots Wednesdays\, bringing live music back home to historic Harvard Square. \n“Cambridge\, our fair city\, and I share deep roots\, and I’m thrilled to find a new musical home at The Sea Hag\,” says Massachusetts-based singer/guitarist\, Barrett Anderson.  “Good music and good food are two of our most basic\, fundamental needs\,” he continues\, “What great joy they give us.  I am so happy to revel in that every Wednesday night with my dearest musical friends\, and Kari and her incredible team at The Sea Hag.  We go way back together\, and I can’t imagine all the fun we have ahead.” \nIndeed\, Anderson has strong connections to this scene.  He remembers: “My first professional experience came when I was 15\, backing up Muddy Waters’ band alums Pinetop Perkins and Bob Margolin at the original House of Blues on Winthrop Street.  A few months after that I began busking\, you’d often find me in Brattle Square or by the pit.  This would have been mid/late 90s.”  While still a teen\, Anderson was a member of The Monster Mike Welch Band and Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters (“Ronnie was my guitar hero.  Then he was my teacher\, then my boss.  Now he’s my musical Father\,” Anderson says)\, before eventually starting The Barrett Anderson Band in 2007. \nAnderson won a Boston Music Award (2013 Blues Artist of the Year)\, was on the Billboard charts (2020’s live album Hynoboogie spent 3 weeks on the Billboard Blues Album chart\, peaking at #6)\, and was nominated for a Blues Music Award (2023 Band of the Year with Anthony Geraci & The Boston Blues All-Stars)\, all the while playing nationally\, internationally\, and locally in Cambridge and the greater Boston area. \nIn addition to the musical roots\, long-time locals may recognize Anderson from a decade serving tables and bartending at The Sea Hag’s sister establishment\, Grendel’s Den\, or from Abodeon\, the mid-century modern shop started by his family. \nMusic starts every Wednesday at 6:30 at The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar\, 49 Mt Auburn St\, and there’s no cover.  “We start while people are dining\,” Anderson states.  “It forces us to play dynamically\, dig deep\, and explore the space\, creating music that doesn’t demand attention but rewards it.”  He adds with a grin “We do get to turn up and demand attention too\, we just have to time it right.” \nJoining Anderson (vocals and guitar) are Paul Loranger (upright and electric bass)\, and Joey Pafumi (drums and percussion).  “This is the core of The Barrett Anderson Band\,” Anderson explains.  “The full band has wonderful additional musicians\, but for this gig tight and light was right.  This gives us the flexibility to learn material fast and improvise easily on the spot\, allowing for regular guests and specially themed evenings.  We’re making sure that each week is rewarding and unique.” \nThe Barrett Anderson Band are digging deep into their Cambridge roots for the first string of shows\, featuring local roots rock king Dennis Brennan as a special guest. \nBlues & Roots Wednesdays at The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar\n49 Mt Auburn St\, Cambridge MA 02139\nMusic starts @ 6:30\nWednesday nights \n  \nWhat critics say about Barrett Anderson \nFrom Jay Clestowski\, Disciples of Sound: “Barrett Anderson continues to carry the torch that J. Geils left behind…  HypnoBoogie demonstrates that some of the best grooves come out of the ‘dirty water’ and that’s where they belong.” \nFrom JD Nash\, American Blues Scene: “This Bean Town foursome packs enough raw energy on stage to power the whole of New England.” \nFrom Chris Spector\, Midwest Record: “Anderson has the chops and spark to make a real statement his own way.  Hot stuff.” \nFrom Jay Miller\, The Patriot Ledger: “HypnoBoogie… is the kind of refreshingly vibrant\, genre-crossing album that is a throwback to the days when rock ‘n’ roll acknowledged its roots in blues\, but ventured wherever the spirit took it.” \nWhat critics say about The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar \nFrom Sheryl Julian\, Boston Globe: “Harvard Square’s Sea Hag is the little sister to Grendel’s Den…” \nFrom Kara Baskin\, Boston Globe: “The team behind Grendel’s Den in Harvard Square has opened Sea Hag\, replacing The Bouthouse.  Wash ashore for fish and chips\, Jamaican beef patties\, arancini\, crab dip\, raw bar delights\, and muffins…” \nFrom Boston Restaurant Talk: “The Sea Hag opens in the former Boathouse space in Harvard Square.” \nFrom Marc Levy and Rónán Fitzgerald: “Grendel’s Den owner Kari Kuelzer is expanding in Harvard Square\, taking over the Boathouse location to open The Sea Hag Restaurant & Bar.” \nwww.barrettandersonband.com\nwww.seahag02138.com

SUMMARY:Rachel McCartney
DESCRIPTION:Rachel McCartney is releasing a new album\, Taming Dragons\, and sharing it at Club Passim feels like a true homecoming. McCartney celebrated her previous record release at Passim seventeen years ago\, while very pregnant with her now teenage son. If you were hanging out in Boston in the early 2000s\, it’s likely you’re no stranger to McCartney’s music. She spent her nights playing local and regional venues and her mornings busking for hours at a time in the subway stations. After stepping back from music to fully commit to her career as a labor and delivery nurse\, McCartney is back on the scene with a new record and over a decade of stories to share. Taming Dragons was produced by Zach Hickman and along with Zach\, features musical contributions by Rich Hinman\, Dave Brophy\, and James Rohr\, along with harmony vocals by Rose Polenzani\, Vivian Sessoms\, and McCartney’s long-time collaborator and friend Teddy Goldstein\, who will kick off the night’s festivities.

SUMMARY:The Last Dive Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening and panel discussion of “The Last Dive”\, a new documentary following the story of a giant manta ray off the coast of Mexico. The film tells the story of a man named Terry who’s life was transformed by an unlikely friendship with Willy\, a 22-foot oceanic manta ray. For nearly two decades\, Willy would slap his wings against the hull of Terry’s sailboat to signal their next dive\, and together they explored the ocean’s depths—an extraordinary bond that turned Terry into an unexpected conservationist. Now in his 80’s\, Terry embarks on one final journey to a remote island in hopes of reuniting with his old friend. But he’s also searching for something deeper: peace\, closure\, and a chance to say goodbye. \n  \nFood\, drinks\, and a chance to win some exciting prizes will all be available at the event\, so get ready for an evening of ocean adventure. \n\n\n\n\nDana Tricarico \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWildlife Conservation Society – Manta Ray Expert \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDana Tricarico received her Master’s of Professional Science from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science in 2015 where she researched the invasive lionfish species in South Florida. Prior to that\, she received her Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from Siena College in 2014 with a minor in Psychology\, and concentration in Globalization Studies. \n  \nShe began her professional career as a biological science technician for the National Park Service\, where she researched tropical marine ecosystem health and urban marine conservation. Through her fieldwork\, and her experiences at various non-profits\, she gained crucial outreach and administrative skills needed to coordinate conservation efforts. \n  \nDana continues to maintain her certification as an AAUS scientific diver\, National Park Service Blue Card Holder for their dive teams and is also a PADI Divemaster. Using her skill set\, she hopes to continue to assist in the growth of the New York Seascape and the WCS Global Marine Conservation as a whole.
