SUMMARY:Pınar Öğrenci: Glück auf in Deutschland (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:Reflect on memory\, labor\, and belonging in this first major U.S. exhibition by Pınar Öğrenci. \nGlück auf in Deutschland marks the first major exhibition in the United States by Berlin-based artist and filmmaker Pınar Öğrenci (b. 1973). The artist’s work invites viewers to question what has been remembered or erased while imagining a future grounded in justice\, equality\, and collective healing and shaped by layered experiences of survival\, resistance\, and resilience. \nThe exhibition includes Öğrenci’s 2024 film Glück auf in Deutschland (Good Luck in Germany)\, which addresses the construction of postwar German identity in the Ruhrgebiet\, a heavily industrialized region known for coal mining and steel production. Five related collages are also on view\, reimagining the bodies of workers and their families within the Ruhr landscape and its architecture. Öğrenci’s use of the phrase Glück auf — a common way that miners wish one another a safe return after their physically grueling and dangerous work underground — resonates with the experiences of immigrant communities in present-day Germany facing right-wing extremism. \nThe photographs in the film and collages were drawn largely from the Ruhr Museum archive in Essen\, Germany\, and include works by artists from the 1950s and ’60s. In her interventions\, Öğrenci reveals how photography helped shape a homogenous\, male-centered identity for both the region and the German nation; she seeks instead to present a more inclusive visual record. Öğrenci’s work is displayed alongside historical photographs from the Busch-Reisinger Museum’s collection. \nCurated by Lynette Roth\, Daimler Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum. \nThis exhibition is supported by the Charles Kuhn Endowment Fund in the Busch-Reisinger Museum. Modern and contemporary art programs at the Harvard Art Museums are made possible in part by generous support from the Emily Rauh Pulitzer and Joseph Pulitzer\, Jr.\, Fund for Modern and Contemporary Art.

SUMMARY:The Way We Never Were: The American Professional Photographers Collection (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:How did photography construct cultural memories of postwar America? \nLife in the United States after World War II is often remembered as a time of prosperity\, stability\, and ease. The Way We Never Were examines the role that professional photography played in shaping this familiar image. Photographers working on commission for private clients\, businesses\, and civic organizations produced portraits and promotional images that did more than document everyday life—they staged and refined it\, helping define how Americans saw themselves and their nation. \nDrawn from the Harvard Art Museums’ American Professional Photographers Collection\, this exhibition brings renewed attention to a vast archive assembled in the 1970s by sociologist and curator Barbara P. Norfleet. The archive\, comprising more than 20\,000 photographs from studios active between the late 1930s and the early 1960s across the United States\, depicts weddings\, school events\, corporate gatherings\, and other social rituals—what Norfleet described as a “unique and valuable record of American life.” \nThe exhibition traces how these commissioned photographs helped create a shared visual understanding of mid-century American culture\, pointing not only to what was included\, but also to what was left out of the photographic record. Organized around themes such as the postwar economic boom\, the rise of suburbia\, cultural conformity\, and growing struggles for equal rights\, the photographs in the exhibition reflect broader social tensions around race\, gender\, class\, and belonging. By considering the tools\, techniques\, and commercial priorities that made these idealized images possible\, The Way We Never Were examines how postwar professional photography shaped an enduring vision of the past that continues to inform how it is understood today. \nCurated by Audrey Sands\, Richard L. Menschel Associate Curator of Photography\, and Madison Brown\, John R. and Barbara Robinson Family Curatorial Fellow in Photography\, with Bridget Hinz\, Senior Curatorial Assistant for Special Exhibitions and Publications\, Division of Modern and Contemporary Art\, Harvard Art Museums. \nFunding for the exhibition and related programming was provided by the John R. and Barbara Robinson Family Fund for Photography and the M. Victor Leventritt Lecture Series Endowment Fund. Modern and contemporary art programs at the Harvard Art Museums are made possible in part by generous support from the Emily Rauh Pulitzer and Joseph Pulitzer\, Jr.\, Fund for Modern and Contemporary Art.

SUMMARY:Club Passim's Campfire Festival
DESCRIPTION:Over 100 artists from across New England and beyond will once again come together for four full days of music at Club Passim over Labor Day Weekend. For 28 years\, this cherished semi-annual festival has brought together rising talent\, seasoned musicians\, and veteran performers for a marathon weekend of live music.\nAs is Campfire tradition\, the festival’s musical acts will perform in an array of styles and configurations ranging from intimate\, “in-the-round” sessions where songwriters share songs\, swap stories\, and spark new collaborations— to solo sets\, small ensembles\, and full band lineups. Simultaneously\, in true Club Passim fashion\, these artists also run the gamut of genres across the musical spectrum with folk\, rock\, indie\, bluegrass\, Americana\, Celtic\, R&B\, and more all well represented. Single-day and weekend passes are on sale now at passim.org.\n“Campfire continues to amaze me every single time. It is an all-you-can-listen buffet of incredible talent. Come in with ears wide open – you’re bound to find your next favorite artist\,” said Matt Smith\, Managing Director at Club Passim.\nIn 1998\, Passim established Campfire to fill a bad booking weekend\, but today\, it has become one of the primary methods for local audiences to discover new talent. Originally known as “On the Cutting Edge of the Campfire\,” this festival merged the concept of artists playing music around the campfire with Passim’s commitment to introducing up-and-coming talent to interested and discerning listeners.\nNow\, audiences can experience scores of new artists in an intimate seated space. Swapping between songwriter rounds and band sets\, attendees will get a glimpse of a music scene that is much bigger than a single room. A Campfire weekend is without question the best way to see new artists in Greater Boston and the ultimate Club Passim experience\nThe complete 2026 Campfire Labor Day Weekend lineup is available at Passim.org.\nPrevious Campfire artists include Anais Mitchell\, Lake Street Dive\, Tall Heights\, Alisa Amador\, Lori McKenna\, Josh Ritter\, Jenny Owen Youngs\, Jake Blount\, Mary Gauthier\, Regina Spektor\, and so many more.\nAll of this year’s performances will take place at Club Passim. Performances will begin at 6:00 P.M. on Friday (September 4th)\, and 2:00 P.M on Saturday (September 5th)\, Sunday (September 6th)\, and Monday (September 7th).\nCampfire Festival returns to Club Passim September 4th through September 7th. Tickets are $20 for a single day and $35 for the whole weekend and are available at www.passim.org. Student tickets are free with a valid student ID. Club Passim is located at 47 Palmer St.\, Cambridge\, MA\, 02138.\n\nAbout Passim\nThe mission of Passim is to provide truly exceptional and interactive live musical experiences for both performers and audiences\, to nurture artists at all stages of their careers\, and to build a vibrant\, inclusive music community. Passim does so through its legendary listening venue\, music school\, artist grants\, and community programs. As a nonprofit since 1994\, Passim carries on the heritage of its predecessors- the historic Club 47 (1958-1968) and the for-profit Passim (1969-1994). We cultivate a diverse mix of musical traditions\, emphasizing the relationships among performers and audiences\, and among teachers and students. Located in Harvard Square\, Passim serves Cambridge and the broader region by featuring local\, national\, and international artists. Our ultimate goal is to help the performance arts flourish and thereby enrich the lives of members of our community. For a complete schedule\, visit www.passim.org.

DESCRIPTION:18+ w/ 2-Item Suggested Minimum. Please Arrive Early to Guarantee Seating. \n\nBorn and raised in The Bronx\, New York\, Mark Viera became fascinated with comedy very early on. While Mark’s mom spent countless hours as a social worker to provide for her family\, Mark and his older brother would pass the time watching the popular TV shows of the 70’s and 80’s. He became so engaged in the performances of his favorite comic personalities\, it didn’t take long before he began to emulate the characters he came to love. On any given night\, he would entertain his family with remarkably accurate portrayals from shows like “Carol Burnett”\, “Sanford and Son”\, and “Three’s Company”. Mark’s numerous television credits include performances on the critically acclaimed “Martin Lawrence Presents 1st Amendment Stand-Up”\, “Comedy Central’s Russell Simmons Presents Stand-Up at the El Rey”\, AXS TV’s “Gotham Comedy Live” a live stand up performance\, BET’s “ComicView”\, and Comedy Centrals “Gabriel Iglesias Presents: Stand Up Revolution”. Mark’s most recent television appearances are several episodes of Byron Allen’s “Comic Unleashed.” He was recently asked to join comic icon Gabriel Iglesias’s “Unity Through Laughter” world tour. \nOur Bar opens 1 hour before early shows and 20 minutes before late shows. So come early and grab a drink with us! Dick story that puts supposedly average guy Doug Quaid (Schwarzenegger) at the center of a conspiracy involving suppressed memories and an anti-authoritarian rebellion on Mars… or is it all just the product of a technologically enhanced overactive imagination?
