SUMMARY:The Way We Never Were: The American Professional Photographers Collection (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:How did photography construct cultural memories of postwar America? \nLife in the United States after World War II is often remembered as a time of prosperity\, stability\, and ease. The Way We Never Were examines the role that professional photography played in shaping this familiar image. Photographers working on commission for private clients\, businesses\, and civic organizations produced portraits and promotional images that did more than document everyday life—they staged and refined it\, helping define how Americans saw themselves and their nation. \nDrawn from the Harvard Art Museums’ American Professional Photographers Collection\, this exhibition brings renewed attention to a vast archive assembled in the 1970s by sociologist and curator Barbara P. Norfleet. The archive\, comprising more than 20\,000 photographs from studios active between the late 1930s and the early 1960s across the United States\, depicts weddings\, school events\, corporate gatherings\, and other social rituals—what Norfleet described as a “unique and valuable record of American life.” \nThe exhibition traces how these commissioned photographs helped create a shared visual understanding of mid-century American culture\, pointing not only to what was included\, but also to what was left out of the photographic record. Organized around themes such as the postwar economic boom\, the rise of suburbia\, cultural conformity\, and growing struggles for equal rights\, the photographs in the exhibition reflect broader social tensions around race\, gender\, class\, and belonging. By considering the tools\, techniques\, and commercial priorities that made these idealized images possible\, The Way We Never Were examines how postwar professional photography shaped an enduring vision of the past that continues to inform how it is understood today. \nCurated by Audrey Sands\, Richard L. The second part of the program jumps forward in time to 20th- and 21st-century Iran\, using the Harvard Peabody Museum’s “From Iran: A Visual Testimony” photographic exhibition as an entry point to more recent historical events and Iranian perspectives on them. We will then delve into Iran’s political history and international relations from the early 20th century forward\, noting historical continuities with the past as well as ruptures. Bring your questions and curiosity\, regardless of the grade level you teach — this will be a remarkable opportunity to engage with expert historians and curators! This program is in collaboration with the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard.

DESCRIPTION:Atlanta native Joe Alterman expresses a certain upbeat naivete\, with a broad smile and bright eyes that make you feel welcome. One would not guess that this is a man hailed by greats; Ramsey Lewis describes his music as “happy music with tasty meat on the bones\,” Les McCann states “Joe’s on a ‘blow your mind’ level\,” and Ahmad Jamal calls him “a very special artist.” Journalist Nat Hentoff championed three of Alterman’s albums\, as well as his writing (Joe wrote liner notes to three Wynton Marsalis/JLCO albums)\, calling one of Joe’s columns “one of the very best pieces on the essence of jazz\, the spirit of jazz\, that I’ve ever read\, and I’m not exaggerating.” \nJoe Alterman began at NYU with a BA and Masters in Jazz Piano from NYU and has since performed at many world-renowned venues including the Kennedy Center\, Lincoln Center\, Birdland and Blue Note alongside Houston Person\, Les McCann\, Dick Gregory\, Ramsey Lewis\, and his own trio\, among others. Downbeat describes his sound as “rooted in the blues\, and with a touch reminiscent of the great pianists of the 1950s—Red Garland\, Ahmad Jamal\, Bill Evans.” It is clear Joe hits all of the necessary points for Jazz critics and fans alike.
