SUMMARY:The Way We Never Were: The American Professional Photographers Collection (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:How did photography construct cultural memories of postwar America? \nLife in the United States after World War II is often remembered as a time of prosperity\, stability\, and ease. The Way We Never Were examines the role that professional photography played in shaping this familiar image. Photographers working on commission for private clients\, businesses\, and civic organizations produced portraits and promotional images that did more than document everyday life—they staged and refined it\, helping define how Americans saw themselves and their nation. \nDrawn from the Harvard Art Museums’ American Professional Photographers Collection\, this exhibition brings renewed attention to a vast archive assembled in the 1970s by sociologist and curator Barbara P. Norfleet. The archive\, comprising more than 20\,000 photographs from studios active between the late 1930s and the early 1960s across the United States\, depicts weddings\, school events\, corporate gatherings\, and other social rituals—what Norfleet described as a “unique and valuable record of American life.” \nThe exhibition traces how these commissioned photographs helped create a shared visual understanding of mid-century American culture\, pointing not only to what was included\, but also to what was left out of the photographic record. Organized around themes such as the postwar economic boom\, the rise of suburbia\, cultural conformity\, and growing struggles for equal rights\, the photographs in the exhibition reflect broader social tensions around race\, gender\, class\, and belonging. By considering the tools\, techniques\, and commercial priorities that made these idealized images possible\, The Way We Never Were examines how postwar professional photography shaped an enduring vision of the past that continues to inform how it is understood today. \nCurated by Audrey Sands\, Richard L. Menschel Associate Curator of Photography\, and Madison Brown\, John R. and Barbara Robinson Family Curatorial Fellow in Photography\, with Bridget Hinz\, Senior Curatorial Assistant for Special Exhibitions and Publications\, Division of Modern and Contemporary Art\, Harvard Art Museums. \nFunding for the exhibition and related programming was provided by the John R. and Barbara Robinson Family Fund for Photography and the M. Victor Leventritt Lecture Series Endowment Fund. Modern and contemporary art programs at the Harvard Art Museums are made possible in part by generous support from the Emily Rauh Pulitzer and Joseph Pulitzer\, Jr.\, Fund for Modern and Contemporary Art.

SUMMARY:On Location: Drawing the Outdoors (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:Discover how an intimate and reflective relationship with nature can shape artistic vision. \nMeander through visions of the outdoors to discover how landscapes offered 19th-century European artists freedom\, renewal\, and rediscovery beyond the pressures of society. Placing the natural world at the center of artistic expression and featuring drawings by J. M. W. Turner\, John Constable\, Gustave Courbet\, Edouard Manet\, Berthe Morisot\, Paul Cézanne\, and Vincent van Gogh\, among many others\, On Location: Drawing the Outdoors includes approximately 140 sketches\, watercolors\, and pastels in a showcase of creativity devoted to and inspired by nature. \nOrganized into 10 thematic sections\, the exhibition unfolds like a series of trails through the landscape\, tracing changing perceptions\, the rise of environmentalism\, and shifting national and artistic identities. Along the way\, it introduces the techniques\, formats\, and functions of outdoor drawings and watercolors\, showing how artists employed them to interpret the countryside and portray sites of natural beauty. On Location: Drawing the Outdoors offers visitors a space to reflect on how the experiences and motivations of 19th-century artists still resonate today. \nAn accompanying exhibition catalogue provides an expansive look at the topic through 5 panoramic essays and 10 focused thematic introductions\, by contributors with a range of interests and perspectives. \nCurated by Joachim Homann\, Maida and George Abrams Curator of Drawings\, with Meghan Grady\, Curatorial Assistant for Special Exhibitions and Publications\, Division of European and American Art\, and Susanne Bartels\, Stanley H. Durwood Foundation Curatorial Fellow (2024–26). Contributors include Penley Knipe\, Philip and Lynn Straus Senior Conservator of Works of Art on Paper and Head of the Paper Lab; Miriam Stewart\, Curator of the Collection\, Division of European and American Art; and current and former Harvard graduate student interns and Ph.D. candidates: Kacper Kolęda\, Byron Otis\, Sarah C. SUMMARY:Fork in the Road
DESCRIPTION:Imbued with the spirit (and presence) of the late poet/environmentalist Wendell Berry and featuring Emmy-winning actor/bestselling writer (and executive producer) Nick Offerman\, FORK IN THE ROAD explores the profound connections between people\, the land\, and the future of our food system. From kelp harvesters in Alaska to dairy farmers in the midwest\, a tapestry of compelling stories from small-scale farmers across the U.S. helps paint a picture of the scale and scope of agricultural industrialization\, and what that could mean for the road ahead. With insights from visionary chefs\, mission-minded culinary experts\, and hopeful innovators working to advance a healthier food future for the country and the planet\, the film delves far beyond the farm to reveal the authentic\, lived realities and unprecedented challenges of those combatting the tide of escalating consolidation—establishing food sustainability as a shared responsibility that extends into our bodies\, kitchens\, and communities. \nDirector: Jonathan Nastasi\, Vivian Sorenson \nRun Time: 88 min. \nRelease Year: 2026

SUMMARY:All About the Money
DESCRIPTION:ALL ABOUT THE MONEY is an extraordinary investigative journey into the power and peril of extreme wealth—and what happens when one man decides to turn his privilege into a revolution. Born into one of America’s richest families\, Fergie Chambers cut ties with his family trust and suddenly controls hundreds of millions of dollars. In the quiet town of Alford\, Massachusetts\, Fergie builds an intentional community he calls a “revolutionary training ground.” But as idealism meets ego\, and theory collides with reality\, tensions rise—both within the group and the surrounding town. Drawing from nearly three years of unprecedented access\, filmmaker Sinéad O’Shea (PRAY FOR OUR SINNERS\, GlobeDocs ’22) captures a story of conviction\, control\, and contradiction—a cautionary tale about money\, ideology\, and the messy human desire to change the world without losing yourself in the process. \nDirector: Sinéad O’Shea \nRun Time: 95 min. \nRelease Year: 2026

SUMMARY:Dafnis Prieto Sí o Sí Quartet
DESCRIPTION:PERSONNEL:\nDafnis Prieto\, Drums\, Compositions\, Music Director\nPeter Apfelbaum\, Soprano Sax\, Tenor Sax\, Flute\nMartin Bejerano\, Piano\nRicky Rodríguez\, Electric Bass \n25 years after his arrival in New York\, the GRAMMY-winning and Latin GRAMMY-nominated drummer\, composer\, and MacArthur Fellow Dafnis Prieto has utterly shifted the sonic landscape of the jazz and creative music scene. With Prieto’s appearance on the NYC jazz scene likened to “an asteroid hitting the city” (The New York Times)\, and a reputation that rightfully lauds him as “one of the most multidimensional artists working today” (JazzTimes)\, the Cuban drummer strikes once again with his 10th album\, 3 Sides of the Coin. This album marks the studio return of Prieto’s acclaimed Sí o Sí (“Yes or Yes”) Quartet\, a rightfully jubilant cohort comprising Peter Apfelbaum on woodwinds\, Martin Bejerano on piano\, and Ricky Rodríguez on electric bass\, brought together to commemorate both the bandleader’s quarter century in the United States and his 50th birthday.

SUMMARY:Give Me the Ball!
DESCRIPTION:A global icon whose impact on equality resonates far beyond the tennis court\, the personal sacrifices behind Billie Jean King’s rise have often remained hidden. GIVE ME THE BALL! shines a light on the immense cost of King’s game-changing fight to professionalize her sport and secure equal treatment for women. From an unhappy marriage and keeping her sexual orientation hidden to eating disorders and relentless misogyny\, Billie Jean’s path was long and often lonely\, but this rousing documentary expands beyond the historic 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” match to depict King as the tireless fighter she was committed to being. Incorporating rare archival footage and honest interviews\, filmmakers Liz Garbus (a two-time Academy Award nominee) and Elizabeth Wolff present a powerful portrait of resilience and triumph\, deepening our understanding of a revered American athlete. \nDirector: Elizabeth Wolff\, Liz Garbus \nRun Time: 101 min. \nRelease Year: 2026

SUMMARY:HAUSU + A Tape: The American History of Nobuhiko Obayashi’s HOUSE
DESCRIPTION:A Tape: The American History of Nobuhiko Obayashi’s HOUSE\nNew England Premiere! Filmmaker Q&A!\n2026 • dir Max G. Robinson • 10 min \nA retro-fashioned look into how the enigmatic 1977 Japanese classic horror-comedy evolved from seldom-seen cinema curio to cult film favorite\, as told by the video clerks\, musicians\, distributors and film buffs who rediscovered it. A special presentation just in time for Halloween\, the short film and filmmaker Q&A will be followed by a 35mm screening of Nobuhiko Obayashi’s HOUSE (in Japanese with English subtitles). \nScreening with… \nHAUSU\n1977 • dir Nobuhiko Obayashi w/Kimiko Ikegami\, Miki Jinbo\, Kumiko Ohba\, Ai Matsubara\, Mieko Sato\, Eriko Tanaka\, Masayo Miyako • 88 min \nNobuhiko Obayashi’s best-known film internationally is this bonkers haunted house tale based on the fantasies and fears of his pre-teen daughter. A gaggle of teenage friends go on an innocent trip to a country house only to discover it populated by all manner of evil spirits… and one particularly bloodthirsty piano. Weird\, wild\, and uncategorizable\, HAUSU is a justifiably revered cult classic and hopefully a gateway to further encounters with Obayashi’s distinctly bent sense of cinema.

SUMMARY:Harvard Square French Fry & Pairings Food Tour
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Square is famous for so much — Harvard University\, eclectic bookshops\, buskers\, and a food scene that punches well above its weight. But here’s what most visitors don’t know: it’s also home to some of the best french fries in all of Massachusetts. Together with our guide Larom\, a Harvard alum\, we built an entire tour around that fact\, and it’s become one of the most unique food experiences in Cambridge. \nOn this 90-minute walking adventure\, you’ll sample distinctly different styles of fries at three beloved Harvard Square spots — from classic hand-cut wedges to smoky BBQ fries to legendary sweet potato fries — each paired with a drink chosen specifically to bring out the flavors. We’ll try the original raspberry lime rickey\, a refreshing peach lemonade\, and a crazy ice cream frappe that has to be seen to be believed. All pairings are non-alcoholic\, making this tour genuinely fun for the whole family. \nAlong the way\, your guide will walk you through the beloved cobblestone streets past Harvard Yard\, the Widener Library\, the quirky Harvard Lampoon building\, and the storied Harvard Faculty Club — sharing the funny\, fresh\, and occasionally absurd stories that make this neighborhood unlike anywhere else in Boston. You’ll also hear the full saga of the French Fry Wars of the late 20th Century\, a deliciously bizarre chapter of local food history that explains why Harvard Square’s fry scene is what it is today. \nThis food tour is ideal for: \n\nVisitors to Boston looking for a memorable\, off-the-beaten-path Cambridge experience\nFamilies with kids and teens who want something interactive and delicious\nDate nights — quirky\, fun\, and plenty of good food\nBirthday celebrations and small group outings\nLocal students\, grad students\, alums\, and neighbors who want to see a new side of Harvard!

SUMMARY:The Oldest Person in the World
DESCRIPTION:Supercentenarians seize the spotlight in Academy Award-nominated documentarian Sam Green’s decade-long global odyssey to chronicle the ever-changing title holders of “oldest person alive.” As the distinction inevitably cedes from one titleholder to the next\, Green keeps pace with each pass of the torch\, while his personal fascination in the topic entangles with significant milestones and challenging life events of his own. What starts as a portrait of longevity unfolds into a poignant meditation on the passage of time\, the happenstance of fate\, and the joy and profundity of being human—and experiencing life. \nDirector: Sam Green \nRun Time: 87 min. \nRelease Year: 2026

SUMMARY:October Harvard Square Book Circle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our October Harvard Square Book Circle meeting!\nThis month we’re discussing Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places by Colin Dickey. \nDon’t forget each book we discuss is part of our featured Select 70 for frequent buyer members. \nThe Book Circle is Harvard Book Store’s monthly book club open for members of the community to meet and discuss a thoughtfully selected book. We’ll meet in the third room of the store from 6–7:30 PM. Registration is not required and no commitment is necessary. We love new participants! If you are interested in joining the Book Circle’s email list\, sign up through this form. \nAbout Ghostland\nOne of NPR’s Great Reads of 2016\nFrom the author of The Unidentified\, an intellectual feast for fans of offbeat history that takes readers on a road trip through some of the country’s most infamously haunted places—and deep into the dark side of our history. \nColin Dickey is on the trail of America’s ghosts. Crammed into old houses and hotels\, abandoned prisons and empty hospitals\, the spirits that linger continue to capture our collective imagination\, but why? His own fascination piqued by a house hunt in Los Angeles that revealed derelict foreclosures and “zombie homes\,” Dickey embarks on a journey across the continental United States to decode and unpack the American history repressed in our most famous haunted places. Some have established reputations as “the most haunted mansion in America\,” or “the most haunted prison”; others\, like the haunted Indian burial grounds in West Virginia\, evoke memories from the past our collective nation tries to forget. \nWith boundless curiosity\, Dickey conjures the dead by focusing on questions of the living—how do we\, the living\, deal with stories about ghosts\, and how do we inhabit and move through spaces that have been deemed\, for whatever reason\, haunted? Paying attention not only to the true facts behind a ghost story\, but also to the ways in which changes to those facts are made—and why those changes are made—Dickey paints a version of American history left out of the textbooks\, one of things left undone\, crimes left unsolved. \nSpellbinding\, scary\, and wickedly insightful\, Ghostland discovers the past we’re most afraid to speak of aloud in the bright light of day is the same past that tends to linger in the ghost stories we whisper in the dark.

SUMMARY:Thomas Frank at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store welcomes Thomas Frank—a founding editor of The Baffler\, a former columnist for The Wall Street Journal\, and the bestselling author of What’s the Matter with Kansas? and Listen\, Liberal—for a discussion of his new book The Creativity Con: How Innovation Became America’s Biggest Racket. \nAbout The Creativity Con\nA bold indictment of America’s chronic obsession with creativity and innovation\, tracing how these beloved ideas came to dominate our political and economic conversation while serving to mask inequality and protect elite interests.  \n“Innovation” and “creativity” have been the defining watchwords of American exceptionalism for decades. They’re deployed by business leaders\, tech gurus\, military strategists\, educators\, and urban planners to describe our unique standing in the world. While other countries supposedly suffer from regimentation and a fatal lack of imagination\, the United States is often portrayed as an unmatched dynamo of new ideas and products. In The Creativity Con\, Thomas Frank disabuses us of this notion\, offering a provocative account of the way creativity and innovation have been used as a kind of ideological cover for policies that reinforce the class system. \nFrank charts the construction of America’s glamorous self-image from Sputnik to Silicon Valley\, Apple to Lockheed Martin\, Madison Avenue to Main Street\, Richard Florida to Donald Trump. He deconstructs the innovation agendas touted by politicians; reads pop psychology; tours SXSW\, the mecca of creativity\, where musicians mingle with Pentagon officials; and looks in on the cafés\, sidewalk murals\, and bike lanes that populate the neighborhoods built for the creative class. Along the way\, Frank uncovers the insidious effects of centering innovation and creativity in our rhetoric while\, in practice\, nurturing exactly the opposite. He shows how\, in the name of these noble goals\, our leaders have reoriented the American economy around white-collar knowledge work\, cut taxes for the wealthy\, deregulated banks\, offshored manufacturing\, reoriented cities\, and destroyed what is truly creative about this country. \nDeeply original\, marked by Frank’s signature brilliance and acerbic wit\, The Creativity Con is a troubling X-ray of postwar American business and political culture—and a crushing indictment of the clichés that have undergirded its many failures.

SUMMARY:Ensemble Uncaged | Essential Elements
DESCRIPTION:If you squint\, look\, listen hard\, can you see the Essential Elements?\nA student work by Pauline Oliveros\, sounding nothing like the music she’s best known for\, reveals where it all started. Alex Mincek takes microscopic fragments and through repetition and slight variation\, spins them\, little by little\, Poco a Poco\, into a stunning musical sculpture. Marti Epstein identifies the cardinal point of Bach’s #28th variation from his Goldberg Variations and creates her own\, a sort of Variation2\, while Kelley Sheehan’s Brain Zaps investigates the yet unknown source of this neurological phenomenon\, testing the outer limits of our own understanding of our Essential Elements. \nLongy’s premier new music group\, Ensemble Uncaged is dedicated to performing music by established composers as well as emerging and underrepresented voices\, expressing multiple perspectives. We honor the familiar\, invite the unknown\, and challenge the conceptual limits of concert music in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:1972
DESCRIPTION:When a pregnant Hannah flees an abusive relationship\, she finds unexpected camaraderie with three outcasts riding the rails of America\, outrunning ghosts of their own. After barely escaping an illegal abortion\, she meets the Janes\, an underground network of courageous women who risk everything to provide a choice to women with nowhere to turn. Inspired by true stories of these hidden heroes\, this world-premiere rock opera fuels the ongoing fight for personal freedom. \n1972 is written by musician-activist Chadwick Stokes of the Boston-based indie bands DISPATCH and State Radio with Jessie Nelson (Waitress\, I Am Sam).
