SUMMARY:Pınar Öğrenci: Glück auf in Deutschland (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:Reflect on memory\, labor\, and belonging in this first major U.S. exhibition by Pınar Öğrenci. \nGlück auf in Deutschland marks the first major exhibition in the United States by Berlin-based artist and filmmaker Pınar Öğrenci (b. 1973). The artist’s work invites viewers to question what has been remembered or erased while imagining a future grounded in justice\, equality\, and collective healing and shaped by layered experiences of survival\, resistance\, and resilience. \nThe exhibition includes Öğrenci’s 2024 film Glück auf in Deutschland (Good Luck in Germany)\, which addresses the construction of postwar German identity in the Ruhrgebiet\, a heavily industrialized region known for coal mining and steel production. Five related collages are also on view\, reimagining the bodies of workers and their families within the Ruhr landscape and its architecture. Öğrenci’s use of the phrase Glück auf — a common way that miners wish one another a safe return after their physically grueling and dangerous work underground — resonates with the experiences of immigrant communities in present-day Germany facing right-wing extremism. \nThe photographs in the film and collages were drawn largely from the Ruhr Museum archive in Essen\, Germany\, and include works by artists from the 1950s and ’60s. In her interventions\, Öğrenci reveals how photography helped shape a homogenous\, male-centered identity for both the region and the German nation; she seeks instead to present a more inclusive visual record. Öğrenci’s work is displayed alongside historical photographs from the Busch-Reisinger Museum’s collection. \nCurated by Lynette Roth\, Daimler Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum. \nThis exhibition is supported by the Charles Kuhn Endowment Fund in the Busch-Reisinger Museum. SUMMARY:The Way We Never Were: The American Professional Photographers Collection (Harvard Art Museum)
DESCRIPTION:How did photography construct cultural memories of postwar America? \nLife in the United States after World War II is often remembered as a time of prosperity\, stability\, and ease. The Way We Never Were examines the role that professional photography played in shaping this familiar image. Photographers working on commission for private clients\, businesses\, and civic organizations produced portraits and promotional images that did more than document everyday life—they staged and refined it\, helping define how Americans saw themselves and their nation. \nDrawn from the Harvard Art Museums’ American Professional Photographers Collection\, this exhibition brings renewed attention to a vast archive assembled in the 1970s by sociologist and curator Barbara P. Norfleet. The archive\, comprising more than 20\,000 photographs from studios active between the late 1930s and the early 1960s across the United States\, depicts weddings\, school events\, corporate gatherings\, and other social rituals—what Norfleet described as a “unique and valuable record of American life.” \nThe exhibition traces how these commissioned photographs helped create a shared visual understanding of mid-century American culture\, pointing not only to what was included\, but also to what was left out of the photographic record. Organized around themes such as the postwar economic boom\, the rise of suburbia\, cultural conformity\, and growing struggles for equal rights\, the photographs in the exhibition reflect broader social tensions around race\, gender\, class\, and belonging. By considering the tools\, techniques\, and commercial priorities that made these idealized images possible\, The Way We Never Were examines how postwar professional photography shaped an enduring vision of the past that continues to inform how it is understood today. \nCurated by Audrey Sands\, Richard L. Turner\, John Constable\, Gustave Courbet\, Edouard Manet\, Berthe Morisot\, Paul Cézanne\, and Vincent van Gogh\, among many others\, On Location: Drawing the Outdoors includes approximately 140 sketches\, watercolors\, and pastels in a showcase of creativity devoted to and inspired by nature. \nOrganized into 10 thematic sections\, the exhibition unfolds like a series of trails through the landscape\, tracing changing perceptions\, the rise of environmentalism\, and shifting national and artistic identities. Along the way\, it introduces the techniques\, formats\, and functions of outdoor drawings and watercolors\, showing how artists employed them to interpret the countryside and portray sites of natural beauty. On Location: Drawing the Outdoors offers visitors a space to reflect on how the experiences and motivations of 19th-century artists still resonate today. \nAn accompanying exhibition catalogue provides an expansive look at the topic through 5 panoramic essays and 10 focused thematic introductions\, by contributors with a range of interests and perspectives. \nCurated by Joachim Homann\, Maida and George Abrams Curator of Drawings\, with Meghan Grady\, Curatorial Assistant for Special Exhibitions and Publications\, Division of European and American Art\, and Susanne Bartels\, Stanley H. Previously\, he spent five years at Last Week Tonight with John Oliver\, first as a web producer and then as a staff writer\, where he earned four Emmy Awards\, two Peabody Awards\, and three WGA Awards. Josh also previously wrote for Fuse TV’s Billy On The Street. His most recent hour\, Positive Reinforcement\, is now available to stream. Josh’s debut stand-up special\, People Pleaser\, was released in 2022. In 2016\, Josh made his late-night standup debut on Conan (TBS)\, and he has also performed on Late Night With Seth Meyers (NBC) and The Late Late Show with James Corden (CBS). Gondelman is the author of the essay collection Nice Try: Stories of Best Intentions and Mixed Results\, published in September 2019 by Harper Perennial. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Mount Auburn for a concert that celebrates the third homecoming of the Bigelow Chapel pipe organ* after it was decommissioned by Mount Auburn and reformed by Eden as a new multi-component instrument called Argent and Sable**. \nThe performance includes amplified cello with vocals\, electronics\, and Eden’s band featuring Daniel Gordevich (bass guitar) and AJ Grimes (drums)\, Eden’s original compositions including “Aboriginal Sensible Muchness” which she wrote as her first piece as an artist-in residence\, plus several newer songs inspired by the Cemetery and spending time with her friend Roy Hawes\, the Cemetery’s Operations Manager. \nThe performance will feature a new arco-electroacoustic percussion instrument (2026) created from one of the remaining flute pipes of the Bigelow Chapel organ. \nShe will perform and recite her 2025 musical death awareness meditation “Nox Obscura\,” which explores collective grief\, reinvention\, ritual\, subversion\, and the dark night of the soul. \nAttendees are encouraged to listen\, meditate\, and immerse in the cacophonous sound of Argent & Sable. “The Cemetery Tapes\,” a live performance album recorded in Bigelow Chapel featuring the death meditation “Lux Aeterna” will be available at the event\, plus CDs and other keepsakes.*In October 1924\, a Hook & Hastings pipe organ was installed in Bigelow Chapel as part of an interior renovation by Architects Allen and Collens\, reflecting a return to a more traditional setting for funeral and memorials services. Over the next several decades\, the Cemetery received fewer requests to use the organ for services and the cost of repairs and restoration increased. In December 2022\, the organ was de-accessioned and removed from the Chapel. Records like House With No Home\, Thistled Spring\, and Cynic’s New Year expanded their sonic palette without abandoning the restraint that first set them apart. By the time of Appreciation\, the band had begun to open its sound outward\, introducing richer arrangements and a subtle warmth that suggested growth without rupture. Through it all\, Ringle remained a steady center\, writing songs that favored emotional precision over spectacle. \nThe reissue of Words Are Dead does not attempt to rewrite that history. DESCRIPTION:Adam Hendey is a multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist\, and composer living in Boston\, Massachusetts. A powerhouse accompanist with a backseat-driving style\, Adam Hendey has collaborated and performed with many of traditional music’s brightest stars\, including Maura Shawn Scanlin\, Elias Alexander\, Eliot Grasso\, Éilís Kennedy\, Hanneke Cassel\, and Alasdair Fraser. \nTaking center stage\, he leads his own ensemble featuring vocalist Erin Shea Hogan\, cellist Brendan Hearn\, and fiddler Elias Cardoso. Together the group perform stunning arrangements of traditional and contemporary Celtic music\, featuring material from Hendey’s newly released solo album “Illuminate” (2026). Four voices in harmony\, fiddle\, cello\, and clockwork counterpoints of guitars draw listeners into an intimate sound world where the magic of old-world traditional music comes to life alongside songs and stories from New England’s vibrant folk music community. Celebrating the release of his new solo album “Illuminate\,” this special concert will also feature a variety of special guest appearances by many of the album’s supporting cast. \nAdam is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a Master’s degree in Traditional Music. In addition to performing\, Adam is also a prolific teacher and has taught at Alasdair Fraser’s Sierra Fiddle Camp\, the Acadia Festival of Traditional Music and Dance\, the Community Music School of Santa Cruz\, and the Passim School of Music.
