Suzuki Method at New School of Music

Saturday, September 14, 2019 - Saturday, January 11, 2020 11:00pm - 11:45pm
The Suzuki Method, also known as the “Mother Tongue” approach, was developed by Shin’ichi Suzuki. Shin’ichi began playing the violin at age 17 and in his early 20’s, he moved to Germany to study with violinist Karl Klingler. His struggle to learn German sparked his philosophy of teaching – that every child has the ability to learn his or her native language.

Suzuki’s approach to teaching music builds on the principles of language acquisition. Those principals include – early beginning, listening, love and encouragement, parental support, constant repetition, learning with other children, and learning to read. Because all children learn and master their own language, Suzuki believed all children could learn and master music in the same way.
