Beethoven Reimagined
January 19th
The Great Necks Guitar Trio has enchanted audiences across the United States with its whimsical, interactive, and daring performances. Founded by guitarists Scott Borg, Adam Levin, and Matthew Rohde, the trio — through its original madcap arrangements — stretches at the conventions — and at times, the physical limits — of the guitar with what American Record Guide calls “some of the most inventive artistry you are likely to find in today’s guitar world.”
The trio’s debut album, Original Arrangements for Three Guitars, released in November 2018 on the Frameworks label and reached the top 10 in the Traditional Classical Billboard charts. Praised as “supremely satisfying and original…a wonder to behold” (Classical Guitar Magazine) the album is an exuberant romp through several centuries of orchestral and keyboard repertoire.

Harvard Art Museums
The Art of Looking: 150 Years of Art History at Harvard
Opening January 25th
In 1874–75, the Harvard University course catalogue offered for the first time a series of electives in the history of art. These included two classes in the history of fine arts, taught by Charles Eliot Norton (1827–1908), and a drawing class, taught by Charles Herbert Moore (1840–1930). It marked the birth of the first art history department in the United States, a milestone in the formation of the discipline in this country. Norton believed that the appreciation of the fine arts demanded first to be educated in the art of looking and that learning to see was best accomplished through the practice of drawing. He laid the groundwork for a drawing program and pedagogy that centered students’ training on personal, hands-on interaction with art objects. As Fogg Museum director Edward W. Forbes (1873–1969) put it in 1911, the goal was to bring the “critical” and the “creative” into dialogue. “Art is not dead,” wrote Forbes, “it is not a memory of the past, nor a butterfly preserved in a glass bottle. It is among us, and is part of our life.”
This installation, organized by Felipe Pereda, the Fernando Zóbel de Ayala Professor of Spanish Art, and the graduate students of his Methods and Theory of Art History seminar in Spring 2024, highlights a number of significant moments and central figures in the story of art history at Harvard.

Tall Heights
Sunday, January 26th at 8pm
Tall Heights wants to share a moment with you. A moment in New England, a moment on Earth. With their 2024 release, Softly Softly, Paul Wright (cello/vocals) and Tim Harrington (guitar/vocals) reject isolation; both the universal experience of the early 2020s, and its sound recording definition where different instruments are recorded separately. Harrington explains, “The opposite of isolation in recording is bleed, where you hear the drums and guitar through the vocal mic because everything is happening in the same room. It’s risky because you can’t easily change it later. You’re stuck with whatever you get. Bleeding is just the perfect word for it. It’s scary and it sometimes hurts.”

Ryan Montbleu

Wednesday, January 29th at 8pm
Thursday, January 30th at 8pm
A relentless road warrior and masterful wordsmith, Ryan Montbleau has spent the better part of thirty years cultivating a devoted audience on the strength of his ecstatic live shows and exhilarating sonic versatility.
Montbleau’s freewheeling new album finds him exploring the full spectrum of his influences like never before, touching on folk, rock, funk, soul, hip-hop, and reggae, all with a preternatural ease that belies the intensely focused craftsmanship behind it. The songs are sprawling and unpredictable, grappling with a modern world perpetually teetering on the edge of chaos, but the performances are relentlessly optimistic, insisting on hope and joy in the face of it all. The result is Montbleau’s most vulnerable and cathartic work yet, an album that acknowledges the inevitability of doubt and pain while at the same time celebrating our limitless capacity for growth and love.

Hugh Hinton
Faculty Artist Recital
February 6th
This recital will feature narrative and programmatic works that tell stories on multiple levels. Schubert’s Moments Musicaux (Musical Moments) distill a narrative framework into a single poetic moment and are haunted by his sense of his own imminent mortality. Clara Schuman’s 3 Romances Op 21 were begun after visiting her husband Robert in a mental institution and reflect both her anguish and her agency within her own life’s story. Lili Boulanger’s 3 Morceaux, programmatic pieces written in her unique style of musical impressionism, embody her sense of the fleeting passage of time. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s settings of African American spirituals, such as Deep River played in this program, bring to life the implied narrative contained in the lyrics of the spiritual. And Margaret Bond’s setting of another spiritual, Wade in the Water, dramatizes the story of Moses parting the Red Sea and the identification of enslaved people with the hope for freedom gained through their own action.

Session Americana
Friday, February 14th at 7pm and 9:30pm
Saturday, February 15th at 5pm and 8pm
Late one Sunday night in October 2003, Session Americana had its first jam around a table in the back of Toad in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Looking back, the group has had a natural, almost inevitable evolution from a loose bunch of friends sitting around swapping songs in a bar, to a hot-ticket weekly residency, to a touring collective. Along the way, the band has made nine records (so far), played clubs and festivals across the U.S. and Europe, and developed deep collaborative bonds with a wide community of musicians. Session Americana’s diligent avoidance of music business “shoulds” has led the band down a quirky and joyful path through the music world. The result is evident in the musical prowess the players and singers bring to every show. Swapping instruments, trading off lead vocals and sharing songwriting credits, Session Americana is constantly exploring new collaborations and touring like a band out of time, always searching for a welcoming and homey venue, a long lunch with old friends, and a good glass of wine.
SESSION AMERICANA is musicians’ musicians: a cast of top-shelf players, singers, and writers who tour internationally, taking their own songs, plus hundreds more from the American songbook, on the road. Whether you catch Session Americana in a rock hall or on a festival stage, you’ll be a part of the intimate, raucous scene these players built years ago at Toad, the neighborhood bar where it all began in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
