SUMMARY:Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store welcomes Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian—cardiologist\, public health scientist\, and Director of the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University—for a discussion of his debut book\, Food Is Medicine: Healing Our Bodies\, Nourishing Our Minds\, and Transforming Our Food System. \nAbout Food Is Medicine\nAn urgent exposé of how the food we eat is making us sick\, how we can heal\, and the revolutionary new food system that can mend our health\, economy\, and planet from a world-renowned expert on nutrition and public health.  \nThe food we eat is making us sick. In the nation and around the world\, diet is now the leading cause of illness and premature death\, from heart disease to the global pandemic of diabetes. Advocates of “healthy diets” pin the blame on overeating\, but the bigger issue is that we undereat—we don’t consume enough nutritious food\, food that nourishes and heals. Harnessing the power of the right foods can do more than prevent illness; it can treat it\, extending life while reducing the crippling cost of ill health to our communities and economy. Food Is Medicine shows the way\, from transforming our diets to keep us healthy to getting the right foods into our stores and onto our plates—all while eating plentifully and pleasurably. \nA global authority at the intersection of nutrition\, medicine\, and public policy\, Dariush Mozaffarian\, MD\, DrPH draws on cutting-edge research to turn complex science into a clear\, actionable program to end our health crisis. Exposing a broken food system\, plagued by the harms of ultraprocessing and ruinous to the environment\, he lays out exactly how the meals we eat are damaging our bodies. He reveals the medicinal\, healing power of ideal nutrition and introduces the innovators who are pioneering solutions—at the doctor’s office\, in supermarkets\, in the halls of Congress\, and above all for individuals\, to empower them to access the foods they need to live well. \nWith clarity and optimism\, braiding science\, storytelling\, and practical wisdom\, Food Is Medicine lays out a vision for a twenty-first century food system that will restore health\, nourishment\, and equity without sacrificing convenience or choice. In the process\, these solutions can revitalize our economy\, and even help to heal our planet. \nPraise for Food Is Medicine\n“Drawing on three decades at the unique intersection of cardiology\, nutrition\, and public health\, Dariush Mozaffarian makes a compelling case that the story of modern health is fundamentally the story of food. Food Is Medicine is that rare book that manages to entirely reframe a debate you probably thought you understood while staying firmly grounded in science and the lived reality of patients.”—Dr. Sanjay Gupta \n“Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian’s message is urgent\, optimistic\, and crucial for reclaiming our health and agency. Dr. Mozaffarian masterfully bridges the gap between cutting-edge science and the everyday behavior changes needed to heal our bodies and minds. Food Is Medicine shows that we cannot truly thrive without reforming our approach to food.”—Arianna Huffington\, Founder and CEO of Thrive Global \n“Dariush Mozaffarian is my go-to voice for understanding how food fundamentally shapes human health and well-being. At a time when chronic disease defines modern life\, Food Is Medicine cuts through decades of confusion with clarity\, science\, and wisdom—explaining the root causes of why we are getting sicker and how we can heal. Deeply grounded in science\, wonderfully readable\, and ultimately hopeful\, this book is a roadmap for healthier people and a healthier planet.”—Bill Frist\, M.D.\, former Senate majority leader

SUMMARY:Marcia Chatelain at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store welcomes Marcia Chatelain—Presidential Penn Compact Professor of Africana studies at the University of Pennsylvania and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Franchise—for a discussion of her new book\, How Bright the Path Grows: The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the March on Washington. She will be joined in conversation by Christian Hosam—Assistant Professor of Political Science and Faculty Affiliate of the Albright Institute at Wellesley College. \nAbout How Bright the Path Grows\nFrom the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Franchise comes the little-known story of the pioneering Black women artists and activists who were seen\, but barely heard\, at the 1963 March on Washington. \nThere is no shortage of footage immortalizing the men who spoke at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom\, when 250\,000 Americans gathered beneath the Lincoln Memorial to call for an end to segregation. There were reverends and rabbis\, activists and Rat-Pack icons—and of course the day’s headliner\, whose prophetic dream of a post-Jim Crow world has forever defined the Civil Rights Movement. But there is no “class photo” of the Black women who helped organize the march\, performed on its main stage\, or were honored during its “Tribute to Negro Women Fighters for Freedom.” \nIn How Bright the Path Grows\, Marcia Chatelain weaves a gleaming group portrait of these singular women. Among this cohort were several household names: vaudeville icon Josephine Baker; civil rights activist Rosa Parks gospel legend Mahalia Jackson\, and Daisy Bates\, champion of the Little Rock Nine. But many were relative unknowns\, including Eva Jessye\, the choir director who designed the day’s musical program\, and Anna Hedgeman\, the coordinator who pushed in the eleventh hour for a tribute to Black women’s work. \nHow Bright the Path Grows is a scintillating group biography\, rendering the lives of thirteen Black women visionaries—some famous\, others soon to be—in novelistic detail and like never seen before.

SUMMARY:Akbar Shahid Ahmed at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store welcomes Akbar Shahid Ahmed—award-winning journalist and Diplomatic Correspondent at NOTUS—for a discussion of his new book\, Crossing the Red Line: Biden\, His Advisors\, and Israel’s War in Gaza. He will be joined in conversation by Indira Lakshmanan—award-winning journalist and co-host of WBUR’s Here & Now. \nAbout Crossing the Red Line\nA powerful and authoritative account of how the Biden administration fueled atrocities in Gaza\, from an award-winning foreign affairs journalist. \nFollowing Hamas’s horrific October 7 attack\, Israel launched an offensive of staggering violence in Gaza\, saying it targeted militants while regularly striking hospitals\, schools\, and homes. Critically acclaimed journalist Akbar Shahid Ahmed offers extensive reporting and chilling new details about how the Biden administration enabled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—ignoring warnings from government experts and implicating Americans in thousands of apparent war crimes. Washington did little to free Israeli hostages or shield innocent Palestinians as protests grew nationwide and international human rights principles crumbled. Still\, President Joe Biden denied he was giving Netanyahu a blank check. He set a “red line” over the town of Rafah\, where more than 1 million Palestinians were sheltering\, saying an assault there would risk Israel’s pipeline of American bombs. Yet after Netanyahu’s advance began\, deepening Gaza’s humanitarian catastrophe\, Biden’s team kept weapons flowing. \nIn vivid prose and with unparalleled access to insiders\, Ahmed depicts a White House that resisted a course correction as its failures became undeniable. He probes Biden’s inner circle: a paranoid and imperious group shaped by the War on Terror\, whose choices fueled tens of thousands of avoidable deaths among Palestinians\, Lebanese\, and Israelis\, torpedoed long-time standards for warfare\, and created a more dangerous world for us all. The Biden administration’s decisions drove voter backlash that helped Donald Trump regain power\, and established patterns of impunity that have spurred wider bloodshed under Trump. \nCrossing the Red Line is an urgent reckoning with Biden’s record on Gaza that is vital to understanding historic damage to America’s standing in the world\, and a period whose dark consequences will resonate globally for decades to come.

SUMMARY:Jim Emison at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store welcomes Jim Emison—retired Tennessee trial attorney\, co-founder of Tennesseans for Historical Justice\, and a board member of the Tennessee Historical Society—for a discussion of his book\, Murder on the Hatchie: The NAACP’s First Martyr. He will be joined in conversation by Cornell William Brooks—Hauser Professor of the Practice of Nonprofit Organizations and Professor of the Practice of Public Leadership and Social Justice at the Harvard Kennedy School. \nAbout Murder on the Hatchie\nA groundbreaking work of true crime and civil rights history\, Murder on the Hatchie uncovers the 1940 lynching of NAACP leader Elbert Williams–America’s first martyr for Black voting rights–and the federal failures that buried the case for more than eighty years. \nThe forgotten lynching that launched America’s fight for Black voting rights–and the federal cover-up that followed. \nMurder on the Hatchie uncovers one of the earliest and most consequential crimes in America’s long struggle for Black voting rights: the 1940 lynching of Elbert Williams in Brownsville\, Tennessee. A founding member of the local NAACP\, Williams was murdered for attempting to register Black voters\, decades before the more famous murders of Emmett Till and Medgar Evers. \nThrough rigorous research and gripping narrative\, retired trial attorney Jim Emison reconstructs the events surrounding Williams’s lynching and the federal government’s failure to prosecute his killers. Drawing on FBI files\, Department of Justice correspondence\, and eyewitness accounts\, Emison reconstructs how white officials conspired to silence a community\, implicating local law enforcement\, federal agents\, and even national NAACP leadership. \nEmison repositions Brownsville as a pivotal site in civil rights history and exposes how voter suppression\, racial terror\, and government complicity shaped the American democracy we inherit today. With a foreword by Margaret A. Burnham\, Murder on the Hatchie challenges liberal assumptions about justice and the embedded character of Jim Crow. For readers of Blood Done Sign My Name and By Hands Now Known\, this is both a gripping true-crime investigation and a vital work of historical restoration.

SUMMARY:October Harvard Square Book Circle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our October Harvard Square Book Circle meeting!\nThis month we’re discussing Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places by Colin Dickey. \nDon’t forget each book we discuss is part of our featured Select 70 for frequent buyer members. \nThe Book Circle is Harvard Book Store’s monthly book club open for members of the community to meet and discuss a thoughtfully selected book. We’ll meet in the third room of the store from 6–7:30 PM. Registration is not required and no commitment is necessary. We love new participants! If you are interested in joining the Book Circle’s email list\, sign up through this form. \nAbout Ghostland\nOne of NPR’s Great Reads of 2016\nFrom the author of The Unidentified\, an intellectual feast for fans of offbeat history that takes readers on a road trip through some of the country’s most infamously haunted places—and deep into the dark side of our history. \nColin Dickey is on the trail of America’s ghosts. Crammed into old houses and hotels\, abandoned prisons and empty hospitals\, the spirits that linger continue to capture our collective imagination\, but why? His own fascination piqued by a house hunt in Los Angeles that revealed derelict foreclosures and “zombie homes\,” Dickey embarks on a journey across the continental United States to decode and unpack the American history repressed in our most famous haunted places. Some have established reputations as “the most haunted mansion in America\,” or “the most haunted prison”; others\, like the haunted Indian burial grounds in West Virginia\, evoke memories from the past our collective nation tries to forget. \nWith boundless curiosity\, Dickey conjures the dead by focusing on questions of the living—how do we\, the living\, deal with stories about ghosts\, and how do we inhabit and move through spaces that have been deemed\, for whatever reason\, haunted? Paying attention not only to the true facts behind a ghost story\, but also to the ways in which changes to those facts are made—and why those changes are made—Dickey paints a version of American history left out of the textbooks\, one of things left undone\, crimes left unsolved. \nSpellbinding\, scary\, and wickedly insightful\, Ghostland discovers the past we’re most afraid to speak of aloud in the bright light of day is the same past that tends to linger in the ghost stories we whisper in the dark.

SUMMARY:Thomas Frank at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store welcomes Thomas Frank—a founding editor of The Baffler\, a former columnist for The Wall Street Journal\, and the bestselling author of What’s the Matter with Kansas? and Listen\, Liberal—for a discussion of his new book The Creativity Con: How Innovation Became America’s Biggest Racket. \nAbout The Creativity Con\nA bold indictment of America’s chronic obsession with creativity and innovation\, tracing how these beloved ideas came to dominate our political and economic conversation while serving to mask inequality and protect elite interests.  \n“Innovation” and “creativity” have been the defining watchwords of American exceptionalism for decades. They’re deployed by business leaders\, tech gurus\, military strategists\, educators\, and urban planners to describe our unique standing in the world. While other countries supposedly suffer from regimentation and a fatal lack of imagination\, the United States is often portrayed as an unmatched dynamo of new ideas and products. In The Creativity Con\, Thomas Frank disabuses us of this notion\, offering a provocative account of the way creativity and innovation have been used as a kind of ideological cover for policies that reinforce the class system. \nFrank charts the construction of America’s glamorous self-image from Sputnik to Silicon Valley\, Apple to Lockheed Martin\, Madison Avenue to Main Street\, Richard Florida to Donald Trump. He deconstructs the innovation agendas touted by politicians; reads pop psychology; tours SXSW\, the mecca of creativity\, where musicians mingle with Pentagon officials; and looks in on the cafés\, sidewalk murals\, and bike lanes that populate the neighborhoods built for the creative class. Along the way\, Frank uncovers the insidious effects of centering innovation and creativity in our rhetoric while\, in practice\, nurturing exactly the opposite. He shows how\, in the name of these noble goals\, our leaders have reoriented the American economy around white-collar knowledge work\, cut taxes for the wealthy\, deregulated banks\, offshored manufacturing\, reoriented cities\, and destroyed what is truly creative about this country. \nDeeply original\, marked by Frank’s signature brilliance and acerbic wit\, The Creativity Con is a troubling X-ray of postwar American business and political culture—and a crushing indictment of the clichés that have undergirded its many failures.

SUMMARY:Taylor Grothe at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store welcomes Taylor Grothe—writer of adult and young adult horror\, horror romance\, and dark fantasy\, and scholar of medieval literature and Nordic Saga—for a discussion of their adult debut novel\, Lethal Kiss. They will be joined in conversation by Christa Carmen—Bram Stoker Award-winning and three-time Shirley Jackson Award-nominated author of The Daughters of Block Island\, How to Fake a Haunting\, and Beneath the Poet’s House.  \nAbout Lethal Kiss\nA blood-soaked love story of rage\, revenge\, and belonging\, Taylor Grothe’s adult debut is a sapphic horror/romance that’s as grotesque as it is beautiful. \nPreston University wasn’t Marcella’s first choice of employment\, but there’s only so many deaths that can be chalked up to mysterious circumstances before people get suspicious\, and her 300 years on Earth have taught her how to pack up and move quickly. She’s resolved to keep her head down and enjoy a couple semesters at Preston—and keep her feedings few and far between. That is\, until a professor is found murdered on campus\, and it’s not her doing. \nWhen Lacie was hired as an assistant professor at Preston a year ago\, she knew not everyone makes tenure. But when her only friend disappears without a word\, she begins to suspect that her other missing coworkers didn’t just quit. Unfortunately\, there’s only one person she can trust enough to ask for help—the beautiful\, aloof\, and tantalizingly secretive latecomer\, Marcella. \nLacie and Marcella team up to make a chilling discovery: there’s something festering under the marble floors of Preston University\, and it’s hungry. Marcella might be a monster\, but the deeper into the mystery they dig\, the more she’s attracted to Lacie’s immovable bravery and quiet intelligence. And the closer they grow\, the more Lacie is drawn to Marcella’s vicious nature. \nThe weight of spilled blood and stolen opportunity might be too heavy to carry alone\, so it’s a good thing they have each other. Marcella just has to get her fill\, first.

SUMMARY:Riley Black at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store welcomes Riley Black—science correspondent for Smithsonian\, widely-recognized expert on paleontology\, and award-winning author of The Last Days of the Dinosaurs—for a discussion of their new book\, Tyrant Lizard Queen: The Love\, Life\, and Terror of Earth’s Greatest Carnivore. \nAbout Tyrant Lizard Queen\nFrom the author of the beloved The Last Days of the Dinosaurs\, an imaginative celebration of T. Rex from hatching to adulthood.  \nTyrannosaurus rex is a prehistoric celebrity. Exceeding 40 feet in length and weighing over 9 tons\, the largest individuals of this dinosaurian species were intimidating predators capable of crushing bone and consuming more than a hundred pounds of flesh in a bite. But the last of the tyrant dinosaurs had a life beyond ripping and tearing. More than 66 million years ago\, T. rex courted each other\, nested\, watched over their offspring\, slept\, drank\, and explored ancient floodplains inhabited by a fantastic cast of impressive dinosaurs like the huge long-neck Alamosaurus and burly\, three-horned Torosaurus. For the first time\, the life story of this impressive\, sensitive predator is told as if you were there to watch it unfold. \nIn her latest prehistoric nature walk\, bestselling and award-winning author Riley Black follows the life of plucky T. rex Snaggletooth from the time she hatches through her tumultuous adulthood. The prehistoric forest Snag emerges into is full of danger\, and yet\, as Riley weaves the latest fossil discoveries into the story\, the carnivorous dinosaur survives to play\, court\, fight\, sleep\, nest\, and more as she grows up in Cretaceous North America. She tussles with rival tyrannosaurs\, hunts for delectable prey\, and finds soft moments of connection in the forest. Even the most die-hard dinosaur fan will come away with a new perspective and appreciation for the Tyrant Lizard Queen.

SUMMARY:Lloyd Schwartz at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store welcomes Lloyd Schwartz—winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism\, Poet Laureate of Somerville\, and the Frederick S. Troy Professor of English Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Boston—for a discussion of his latest poetry collection\, Artur Schnabel and Joseph Szigeti Play Mozart at the Frick Collection (April 4\, 1948) and Other Poems.  \nAbout Artur Schnabel and Joseph Szigeti Play Mozart at the Frick Collection (April 4\, 1948) and Other Poems\nLloyd Schwartz’s luminous new collection Artur Schnabel and Joseph Szigeti Play Mozart at the Frick Collection (April 4\, 1948)and other poems reaffirms his place as one of our most keenly attentive poetic voices. With characteristic wit\, intimacy\, and musical acumen\, these poems move fluidly between the rooms of memory and the rooms we live in\, between wry horror\, elegy\, and celebration. The title poem “has so many planes\,” said Helen Vendler. “It’s one of the most dramatic lyrics I think that it’s possible to write.” One of our most celebrated music critics tunes his verse to what Nicholas Everett tags the “idioms and nuances of American speech.” It’s like being invited into the cluttered study of a good and brilliant friend\, where even the most mundane observation is shot through with a bemused heart buoyed by the nimblest of intellects. Each line twinkles at “That dark\, knowing little joke\,” that we are all of us connected deeply and across time by the art we love and create\, and that attention itself is the highest form of devotion.

SUMMARY:David Weinberger at Harvard Book Store
DESCRIPTION:Harvard Book Store welcomes David Weinberger—researcher at Harvard metaLAB\, long-time affiliate of the Harvard Berkman Klein Center\, and bestselling author of Everyday Chaos—for a discussion of his new book\, Beautiful Particulars: How AI’s Attention to the Smallest of Differences Is Reshaping Our Biggest Ideas. \nAbout Beautiful Particulars\nA fresh and eye-opening new explanation of AI—and how its focus on specifics is changing our ideas about ourselves and our world. \nFrom a Harvard researcher\, philosopher\, entrepreneur\, former comedy writer\, and bestselling author.  \nAmid the clamor about AI\, Beautiful Particulars poses a unique question: Not how does our use of AI change what we do\, but how is the idea of AI already subtly yet fundamentally reshaping how we think about ourselves and our world? \nIn clear\, engaging\, and even humorous prose\, David Weinberger offers a new perspective on how machine learning works and how it may already be changing our basic and deepest ideas. Through lively examples\, he shows that AI’s success—with all its risks and dangers—is taking us past our millennia of reliance on laws and principles by revealing what morality\, free will\, creativity\, causality knowledge\, and even reality itself look like now that we’re able to let the particulars speak their tiny truths. \nThe author poses questions not usually asked: What does a coin look like to AI? When AI gives you evidence that the earth is round\, why are its own reasons for saying that so different? Why does an AI image generator create a “selfie” of ancient Aztec warriors with broad smiles that it “believes” are historically unlikely? If AI becomes conscious but bodiless\, could it still make good moral decisions? Why is the world so much better at being causal than AI could ever “understand”? How does AI show us that genuine creativity is not about a “spark” but about moments that feel right? And how can you take the temperature of a joke? \nBeautiful Particulars offers a new—and hopeful—perspective on how machine learning works\, and how that’s already changing how we understand what it means to be human in the age of AI.
