Breast Cancer Community Awareness
and Fundraising Campaign
from July 5th through August 31st 2009
The first Think Pink, Drink Pink, Shop Pink event was held in 2006 when Kari Kueltzer, owner of Grendel’s Den and Pam Giller, a former Grendel’s Bartender, decided to host a fundraiser to help sponsor Pam’s entry into the The Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk. Pam’s team “Breast Man Walking” included Pam’s father, a male Breast Cancer survivor and many other family members and friends. Kari and Pam concluded that Pink Drinks were a great summery way to raise funds and awareness and they brought the idea to the HSBA, who in turn asked all the Harvard Square restaurants to participate, and the enormously successful Think Pink, Drink Pink, Shop Pink community-wide event developed.
Now in its fourth year, the HSBA is pleased to announce its Think Pink, Drink Pink, Shop Pink line-up featuring old favorites such as “Grendel’s Den’s Elaine’s Lime Rickey” and new entries including Sweet’s Pink Lemonade Cupcakes and Plan b’s Pink Hair Extensions!
Each summer our businesses renew their commitment to “Getting Pink for the Cause” by designing new pink items and promotions. With each Pink Drink or menu item or product/service ordered our businesses make donations to Breast Cancer charities including Dana Farber, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the Hoffman Breast Center at Mount Auburn Hospital. At the end of the Think Pink season we tally up the funds raised by the community and we are always impressed by the enthusiasm of our HSBA members, as well as the incredible reception from the press and the public.
One aspect of thinking pink which continues to exhilarate everyone involved is the donation of creative talent by world renowned photographer Ellen McDermott. We all feel very fortunate to have Ellen contribute her time and her stunning photographs to this charitable endeavor! Her pink photos truly capture the spirit of getting pink for the cause and each year she schedules a week into her busy calendar of shooting for publications including Food & Wine, Martha Stewart, Country Living and others to shoot pink photos in Harvard Square. Ellen’s Pink photos are available upon request!
