SUMMARY:Dee Dee Bridgewater + Bill Charlap
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of a multifaceted career spanning four decades\, Grammy and Tony Award-winning jazz giant Dee Dee Bridgewater has ascended to the upper echelon of vocalists\, putting her unique spin on standards\, as well as taking intrepid leaps of faith in re-envisioning jazz classics. Ever the fearless voyager\, explorer\, pioneer and keeper of tradition\, the three-time Grammy-winner recently won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album for Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie With Love From Dee Dee. \nBridgewater’s career has always bridged musical genres. She earned her first professional experience as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Louis Big Band\, and throughout the 70s she performed with such jazz notables as Max Roach\, Sonny Rollins\, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie. After a foray into the pop world during the 1980s\, she relocated to Paris and began to turn her attention back to Jazz. Signing with Universal Music Group as a producer (Bridgewater produces all of her CDs)\, Bridgewater released a series of critically acclaimed titles beginning with Keeping Tradition in 1993. All but one\, including her wildly successful double Grammy Award-winning tribute to Ella Fitzgerald\, Dear Ella\, have received Grammy nominations. \nBridgewater also pursued a parallel career in musical theater\, winning a Tony Award for her role as “Glinda” in The Wiz in 1975. Having recently completed a run as the lead role of Billie Holiday in the off-Broadway production of Lady Day\, her other theatrical credits include Sophisticated Ladies\, Black Ballad\, Carmen\, Cabaret and the Off-Broadway and West End Productions of Lady Day\, for which Bridgewater received the British Laurence Olivier Nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. \nAs a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)\, Bridgewater continues to appeal for international solidarity to finance global grassroots projects in the fight against world hunger. She spent the last year on an extensive global tour in support of “Dee Dee’s Feathers” and was recently honored with a stage dedication in her name at the new People’s Health New Orleans Jazz Market. In June of 2016\, it was announced that Bridgewater is the recipient of an NEA Jazz Masters Fellows Award with honors to be bestowed at the Kennedy Center in April 2017. She is currently in the studio at work on her next CD to be released in 2017.

SUMMARY:Eric Hofbauer and EHX — Tongues / Hope Language Album Release
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist and composer Eric Hofbauer celebrates the release of Tongues / Hope Language\, a concept double album from his new ensemble EHX\, at the Regattabar on April 9. EHX is Hofbauer’s most personal project to date — a fluid sextet that moves freely from string trio to full band orchestration\, performing a “Gen X post-style” repertoire drawn entirely from music that has shaped his life. Björk\, Radiohead\, and Sigur Rós sit alongside Joni Mitchell\, the Beatles\, and Jimi Hendrix\, connected to deeper jazz cuts by Abbey Lincoln and Eddie Harris. The two-disc album explores the sacred power of storytelling: Tongues examines the act of communication — direct\, sardonic\, and political; Hope Language turns toward reflection\, resistance\, and a hard-won hope in humanity. “These songs are the soundtrack of my life so far\,” Hofbauer says\, “and EHX is the dream project I’ve been waiting for.”

SUMMARY:Walter Smith III with special guest\, Bill Pierce
DESCRIPTION:From an early age\, Walter began taking music very seriously. “My first gig was playing at a McDonalds in Houston with another saxophone player. I took a solo on “Blue Bossa.” It was terrible. People clapped\, and I figured if I could get away with that and get applause\, how could I fail?” \nAlthough it may appear Smith is a new voice on the scene\, he is widely recognized as an adept performer\, accomplished composer\, and inspired educator. Smith’s recent release\, In Common III\, has been described as “boundary pushing”\, and features some of the most important and talked about musicians in the world – Matt Stevens\, Kris Davis\, Dave Holland and Terri Lyne Carrington. In April of 2023\, Smith released his debut album for Blue Note records\,“return to casual”\, to critical acclaim.

SUMMARY:Brass Queens
DESCRIPTION:Brass Queens is a female-led\, New York-based brass band that has been dominating the brass band scene since 2019. \nFinding that they shared similar frustrations about the emerging brass band scene in New York City\, co-founders Alex Harris and Ally Chapel came together to form a group dedicated to showcasing the talents of female musicians in a landscape that was dominated by male musicians and bandleaders. After debuting in March 2019\, Brass Queens grew to be a fixture in the local music scene and was dubbed “the hardest working band in town” by their peers. The Queens gained a dedicated following through outdoor performances on the streets of Brooklyn and playing pop-up events in their community through the pandemic. Now\, a core value of the band is to play for as many audiences as possible to increase the visibility of female musicians.

SUMMARY:Melissa Errico: Sondheim in the City
DESCRIPTION:Tony Award nominee Melissa Errico—hailed by Billboard as “the premiere Sondheim interpreter” and The New Yorker as “the finest interpreter of Sondheim working in America today”— makes her Regatta debut with Sondheim in the City\, a jazz-inflected evening devoted to rhythm\, harmony\, the songcraft\, and the city\, of Stephen Sondheim. \nErrico treats his work as modern American song—swinging\, intimate\, and elastic— bringing fresh jazz treatments to well-loved titles like What More Do I Need?\, Good Thing Going\, and Send In the Clowns\, alongside rarities and early gems such as Dawn and Nice Town\, But…. while covering nearly every Sondheim musical\, including Into the Woods\, A Little Night Music\, Company\, Sunday In The Park\, Passion and Sweeney Todd. \nErrico’s relationship to this music is singular. She has starred in four of Sondheim’s musicals\, recorded two acclaimed albums devoted to his work (with The Wall Street Journal calling the first “the best all-Sondheim album ever recorded”)\, and shared a personal artistic bond with the composer himself\, who once said she had the sensibilities of “both an actress and a big band singer.” \nAccompanied by a jazz ensemble led by pianist Tedd Firth\, Errico brings suppleness\, swing and conversational phrasing\, and has been called “a cross between Julie Andrews and Julie London” As Gramophone Magazine noted\, “She makes you feel these have always been jazz standards rather than Broadway numbers.”  Add her deep\, emotional attachment to the music and this is “a rare chance to hear a true Broadway superstar at the peak of her powers” (London Theatre Weekly). Her recent London concert hall debut\, accompanied by the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz quartet playing two acts of Sondheim\, was praised as “the performance of her life”; “magical” (CNN)\, “gorgeous!” (Newsweek)\, “astonishing” (Shenton Stage)\, and “dazzling\, sung with warmth\, insight\, and grace” (BroadwayWorld).

SUMMARY:The Mike Stern Group with Dennis Chambers Plus Leni Stern\, Edmond Gilmore\, and Bob Franceschini
DESCRIPTION:July 16\, 2024: Today\, 6-time GRAMMY nominated jazz guitarist Mike Stern announced his new album Echoes And Other Songs will be released on September 13. Marking his debut release on Mack Avenue Music Group/Artistry Music\, Echoes delivers all the elements that longtime Stern fans want\, and then some: the hook-filled rapid-fire bebop writing; the gorgeous melodic sensibility culled from African music\, gospel and other influences; the breakneck improvisations that pepper hornlike bop virtuosity with rock fire. Along with the announcement\, Stern has shared the lead single “Stuff Happens\,” which features the 9-time Grammy Award winner Christian McBride. \nListen to “Stuff Happens” \n“It’s definitely got a Blues vibe and it opens with a short but really wonderful solo from Christian McBride\,” Stern says of the track. “He is definitely not only one of the greatest upright bass players ever\, but he plays amazing electric bass. Of course\, I knew that going into this project\, so I asked him to play a lot of electric bass and he did that so beautifully on this tune. He played great on everything.” \nStern has been celebrated for his versatile playing style since he first hit the scene in the 1970s\, transcending genres by performing with Blood\, Sweat & Tears\, Miles Davis\, Jaco Pastorius\, The Brecker Brothers\, David Sanborn\, Béla Fleck\, Yellowjackets and more. With Echoes and Other Songs\, Stern brings together an all-star group of musicians\, including Christian McBride\, Chris Potter\, Antonio Sanchez\, Richard Bona & Dennis Chambers\, for 11 brand-new originals that will captivate and unite guitar and jazz fans of all generations. This is Stern’s first release since the loss of longtime producer and keyboardist Jim Beard (who played on and produced the album)\, the closure of Stern’s beloved 55 Bar\, and his 2016 injury\, which he continues to face physical hurdles from.
