DESCRIPTION:Mike DiRubbo – alto saxophone\nCaili O’Doherty – piano\nUgonna Okegwo – bass\nAdam Arruda – drums \nFor three decades\, the New Haven-born\, New York City-based alto saxophonist\, bandleader and educator Mike DiRubbo has reigned supreme as a master of his instrument\, as evidenced by his forthcoming recording Way Out Northwest\, Recorded in Vancouver\, British Columbia. A pun on the title of Sonny Rollins’ epic 1957 LP\, Way Out West\, Way Out Northwest showcases DiRubbo with a Vancouver rhythm section\, swinging on the 8 tracks of no-nonsense\, straight-ahead jazz\, featuring original compositions by DiRubbo\, which include his tributes to pianist Harold Mabern and trumpeter Jim Rotondi. \nHonoring Jazz ancestors while moving the music forward has been DiRubbo’s stock-in-trade\, ever since he studied at Jackie McLean’s Institute of Jazz of the Hartt School\, University of Hartford\, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music in 1992\, and earned a Master of Music in 2018 from SUNY College at Purchase. DiRubbo has been a teaching artist at the Litchfield Jazz Camp for 30 years\, and more recently at the Stanford Jazz Workshop. \nDiRubbo moved to New York City in 1997 and quickly established himself as a leader and a valued sideman with Al Foster\, Jim Rotondi\, Steve Davis\, Cecil Payne\, Tony Reedus\, Joe Farnsworth\, David Hazeltine\, Steve Nelson\, Peter Washington\, Carl Allen\, Mike LeDonne\, Dwayne Burno\, Larry Willis\, Harold Mabern\, Jimmy Cobb and many others. \n\n  \n\nDiRubbo’s 10 recordings as a leader from 1994 to 2023 include: From the Inside Out\, Keep Steppin’\, Human Spirit\, New York Accent – Live at Kitano\, Repercussion\, Chronos\, Four Hands\, One Heart\, Threshold\, Mike DiRubbo Quartet – “Live at Smalls” and Inner Light. \nDiRubbo has been featured in magazines such as Jazziz\, Hot House\, JazzTimes\, Down Beat and JazzWise. DESCRIPTION:Internationally acclaimed pianist/composer Yoko Miwa is one of the most powerful and compelling performers on the scene today. Her trio\, with its remarkable telepathy and infectious energy\, has brought audiences to their feet worldwide. Yoko was named a Rising Star Pianist in the 2022\, 2023\, and 2024 DownBeat Critics Poll. The Yoko Miwa Trio’s 2021 release Songs of Joy received wide acclaim and reached #1 on national jazz radio charts and was voted a best jazz album of 2021 in the DownBeat 86th Annual Readers Poll. Jazziz called it “a radiant new collection.” CD Hotlist said “…yet another triumph from one of America’s finest jazz pianists\, composers\, and bandleaders.” Their 2019 CD\, Keep Talkin’\, showcases Miwa’s fine playing and artful compositions and the trio’s uncanny musical camaraderie. DownBeat gave the recording four stars\, calling it “a beautifully constructed album” and noting “the drive and lyricism of a pianist and composer at home in bebop\, gospel\, pop\, and classical.” JazzTimes also reviewed the album favorably\, praising Miwa’s “jaw-dropping degree of technique.” The album enjoyed seven weeks in the top 10 on Jazz Week’s charts\, much like its predecessor\, Miwa’s 2017 release Pathways\, which also made Jazz Week’s top 10 for several weeks. DESCRIPTION:Over the years\, Peter White has maintained a reputation as one of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape. Armed with an unparalleled combination of lyricism and energy\, he combines elements of jazz\, pop and classical guitar to create a sound that is singular and at the same time accessible to a broad audience. At age 20\, White was invited to tour England\, Scotland and the US with Al Stewart’s band\, opening for artists like Linda Ronstadt\, Billy Joel and Queen. That experience kicked off a twenty-year association with Stewart\, touring and recording hit albums like “Year of the Cat”. After fifteen years as a backup musician and a session player\, White launched his solo recording career with the 1990 release of Reveillez-Vous\, a favorite among contemporary jazz radio stations. He maintained an ambitious release schedule through the ‘90s and beyond\, and found time to appear on recordings by many of his friends\, including Dave Koz\, Rick Braun\, Richard Elliot\, Jeff Golub\, Lee Ritenour\, Kirk Whalum\, and Boney James. DESCRIPTION:After graduating from Northern Illinois University\, keyboardist and composer Brian Simpson relocated to Los Angeles where he was soon playing alongside musicians Gerald Albright and Norman Brown and eventually on a world tour with Janet Jackson. \nIn 1990 Simpson received a call from George Duke that led to a decade of touring and production work with the late jazz legend.
