DESCRIPTION:Center Mid is the folk-rock brainchild of lifelong friends Stephen Higgins (vocals\, guitar)\, Scott Kaplan (guitar)\, and Matt Lowerre (banjo). Along the way\, they’ve ticked off milestones ranging from a Number Two chart placing and Mercury Prize nomination for debut album ‘The Overload’\, to a co-sign from Elton John who joined the band to guest on a string-laden reworking of album closer ‘100% Endurance’.\nYet\, whilst the band’s trajectory continuously shot upwards\, vocalist James Smith and his wife had also welcomed in a son. And it’s this duelling sense of responsibility and ambition\, guilt\, love\, drive and everything in between that forms the narrative backbone of brilliantly exploratory second album ‘Where’s My Utopia’.\nWritten in snapshots of time between a relentless touring schedule\, and produced jointly by the band and Gorillaz’ Remi Kabaka Jr\, the quartet’s second act is a giant leap forward into broad and playful new sonic waters. “The main reason that ‘post-punk’ was the vehicle for Album One was because it was really affordable to do\, but we always liked so much other music and this time we’ve had the confidence to embrace it\,” James explains. Across the record\, influences ranging from Fela Kuti to Ennio Moricone via Spiller’s ‘00s pop smash ‘Groovejet’ make themselves known.\nIt’s a celebratory palette upon which Smith allowed himself to reach lyrically deeper into himself than ever. DESCRIPTION:For nearly two decades\, American Aquarium have pushed toward that rare form of rock-and-roll that’s revelatory in every sense. “For us the sweet spot is when you’ve got a rock band that makes you scream along to every word\, and it’s not until you’re coming down at three a.m. that you realize those words are saying something real about your life\,” says frontman BJ Barham. “That’s what made us fall in love with music in the first place\, and that’s the goal in everything we do.” On their new album The Fear of Standing Still\, the North Carolina-bred band embody that dynamic with more intensity than ever before\, endlessly matching their gritty breed of country-rock with Barham’s bravest and most incisive songwriting to date. As he reflects on matters both personal and sociocultural—e.g.\, the complexity of Southern identity\, the intersection of generational trauma and the dismantling of reproductive rights—American Aquarium instill every moment of The Fear of Standing Still with equal parts unbridled spirit and illuminating empathy. \nRecorded live at the legendary Sunset Sound in Los Angeles\, The Fear of Standing Still marks American Aquarium’s second outing with producer Shooter Jennings—a three-time Grammy winner who also helmed production on 2020’s critically lauded Lamentations\, as well as albums from the likes of Brandi Carlile and Tanya Tucker. In a departure from the stripped-down subtlety of 2022’s Chicamacomico (a largely acoustic rumination on grief)\, the band’s tenth studio LP piles on plenty of explosive riffs and hard-charging rhythms\, bringing a visceral energy to the most nuanced and poetic of lyrics. “In our live show the band’s like a freight train that never lets up\, and for this record I really wanted to showcase how big and anthemic we can be\,” notes Barham\, whose bandmates include guitarist Shane Boeker\, pedal-steel guitarist Neil Jones\, keyboardist Rhett Huffman\, drummer Ryan Van Fleet\, and bassist Alden Hedges. \nMixed by four-time Grammy winner Trina Shoemaker (Queens of the Stone Age\, Emmylou Harris)\, The Fear of Standing Still shares its title with one of the first songs Barham wrote for the album—a soul-baring look at how raising a family has radically altered his priorities and perspective. In the process of creating what he refers to as “a record about growing up and growing older\,” Barham also found his songwriting closely informed by his ten years of sobriety\, as well as his ever-deepening connection with American Aquarium’s community of fans. “Whenever someone tells me that one of our songs helped them in some way\, it encourages me to be more and more open—almost like peeling a layer off an onion\,” he says. “This album is a writer 18 years into his career\, peeling away the next layer and seeing just how human we can make this thing.” \nExpanding on the raw vitality of previous albums like 2012’s Jason Isbell-produced Burn.Flicker.Die\, The Fear of Standing Still kicks offs with “Crier”: a gloriously ferocious track that swiftly obliterates worn-out ideals of masculine behavior. “It’s a song about breaking down what many of us learned from our fathers growing up—this idea that boys don’t cry\, or that crying is a form of weakness\,” says Barham\, who co-wrote “Crier” with singer/songwriter Stephen Wilson Jr. “I wanted to send the message that it’s not natural to bottle everything up inside\, because all of us are meant to feel.” Fueled by a savage and soaring vocal performance from Barham\, the result is a perfect encapsulation of American Aquarium’s multilayered artistry. “I don’t think anyone’s going to get through that first listen of ‘Crier’ and think\, ‘Wow\, what a great song about disrupting the cycle of toxic masculinity!’” Barham points out. “It seems more likely that it’ll make them want to dance and jump around\, and then when they put the headphones on and listen a little closer to the lyrics\, that’s when they’ll start to understand what we’re talking about.” \nA resolutely outspoken artist who’s emerged as one of the most progressive voices in country music\, Barham infuses an element of trenchant social commentary into a number of tracks on The Fear of Standing Still. On “Southern Roots\,” for instance\, Georgia-born singer/songwriter Katie Pruitt joins American Aquarium for a spellbinding meditation on pushing against the boundaries of traditional Southern identity. “People can complain all they want about how backwards the South is\, but the only way we’ll see any change is to take it upon ourselves\,” says Barham. “For me\, that means raising my daughter so that she’ll never witness the closed-mindedness and blatant disrespect for certain people that I often saw at her age. Because if you really love something the way I love the South\, then you want to see it grow.” Co-written by Barham and Pruitt\, “Southern Roots” starts off as a beautifully understated folk song graced with heavenly harmonies\, then builds to a reverb-drenched frenzy at the bridge—a shift that sharply intensifies the track’s galvanizing power. \nAnother song anchored in Barham’s ardent belief in breaking generational patterns\, “Babies Having Babies” arrives as a finespun piece of storytelling that doubles as an emphatic pro-choice anthem. “It’s a mix of fiction and personal experience\, and felt like an important story to tell at a time when a woman’s right to choose is being taken away\,” says Barham. After opening on a nostalgic tale of a whirlwind summer romance\, “Babies Having Babies” slowly takes on a powerful urgency as the narrative turns to questions of consequence and self-preservation (from the second verse: “We packed up a bag and drove to the city/Shouldered through the pickets and the hand-painted signs/They called her names while they called themselves Christians/That sort of hate’s got no place in any faith of mine”). “I grew up in a small and very conservative town where abortion was not an option\, so I saw a lot of people trapped in that generational cycle of getting pregnant at a young age and ending up stuck in the same town forever instead of following whatever dreams they might have had\,” says Barham. “I wanted to write about what could have happened if one of those girls had refused to give up her aspirations\, and made that choice to live another way.” \nWhile American Aquarium bring a lived-in intimacy to all of The Fear of Standing Still\, songs like “Cherokee Purples” encompass a particularly tender emotionality. A wistful reminiscence of all the charmed and wild summers of Barham’s youth\, the track unfolds in so many gorgeously detailed images (kudzu vines and fireflies\, menthol cigarettes and Big League Chew)\, each rendered with a loving specificity that lingers in the listener’s heart. “‘Cherokee Purples’ came from me making a tomato sandwich in my kitchen\, and immediately getting taken back to all the summer days when we’d get dropped off at my grandmother’s so my parents could go to work\,” says Barham. “It’s crazy how something as simple as a tomato sandwich with Duke’s Mayonnaise can take me to a whole other world\, but to me it’s almost like a talisman of where I’m from and how I was raised.” Meanwhile\, on “The Curse of Growing Old\,” American Aquarium look to the other end of the life spectrum\, conjuring a life-affirming mood despite the song’s excruciating honesty. “I wrote that after talking with my grandmother at her 92nd birthday party and learning what it was like for her to grow older and watch so many people in her life pass away\,” says Barham. “It’s true that getting older is a gift\, but it’s a gift we pay for with an incredible amount of loss.” \nFor Barham\, the sharing of hard truths is indelibly tied to his sense of devotion to American Aquarium’s audience—and to his belief in rock-and-roll as a singularly unifying force. “All I really want to do is put words to the emotions that most people have a difficult time expressing on their own\,” he reveals. “No matter what that emotion is\, when you put it into a song and then get to those moments when a whole bunch of people are singing that song all together\, it makes you see that you’re part of something bigger than you ever realized. That’s when you can really affect people’s lives\, and to me this record is another stepping stone to making that a reality.”

DESCRIPTION:Swervedriver are an English alternative rock band formed in Oxford in 1989 around core members Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge. Between 1990 and 1998\, the band released four studio albums for Creation Records in the UK and A&M Records in the US as well as numerous EPs and singles. Breaking up in 1998\, the band reformed in 2007 and have released two further full length albums\, as well as\nreissues of all their albums\, the most recent being the 99th Dream reissue which was released in January 2024 and went to no.18 in the official UK album chart and no.6 in the official UK vinyl albums chart. Their latest release is the World’s Fair EP\, out March 2025. Containing four brand new songs\, the World’s Fair EP is the band’s first new music in over five years.

DESCRIPTION:Glitterer\, the Washington\, D.C.\, post-hardcore band\, has a new record\, its fourth full-length album. It’s called erer and it’s on Purple Circle Records\, a little label that singer/bassist Ned Russin co-owns. Performed by a revamped lineup — drummer Robin Zeijlon and guitarist Colin Gorman came on board last year\, joining singer/bassist Ned Russin and keyboardist Nicole Dao — and recorded by the prolific producer/engineer Arthur Rizk\, who has worked on every Glittererer release since 2019\, erer is the most thematically urgent work the band has produced to date. It’s also the most immediately and sustainedly ear-pleasing.\nParadigmatically\, the lead single\, “Stainless Steel\,” booms Albini-like with sturdy yet subtle drumming\, massive stereo guitars\, and all manner of counterpoints and complements emanating from the keyboard\, in support of a melody — a classic Glitterer melody — that twists and turns\, starts and stops\, and goes exactly where the listener didn’t remotely realize it needed to go. And in Russin’s typically sapient lyrics we hear\, without superfluity or mawkishness\, the bewilderment\, resignation\, anger\, guilt\, and stubborn commitment to beauty and community that the album exists to express. It’s the dialectical inner monologue of a socially engaged\, intellectually curious creative aspirant — a person not unlike yourself — who can’t help but notice that it’s all coming to nothing. “It’s everywhere I turn / I can’t escape / I wish I had ability innate / I wish I wasn’t incapacitated\,” Russin sings. “I’ll pretend that I’m stainless steel / I’ll forget that this all is real.”  What more needs to be said?\nThese are not optimistic times\, and this is not\, at the textual level\, an optimistic record. See for yourself:\nFrom “Until”: “There is nothing you can’t have / Don’t be afraid to reach and grab / Take and take with no regret / See if you can find the end / There is always more / Until there’s not”\nFrom “Not Forever”: “Arc of progress bend towards me … / Have I grown complacent / After all? … / Self absorbed and so important / Aren’t we all? / Everything and everybody / Individual”\nAnd yet\, insofar as the lyrics refuse to put any kind of gloss on the emotional truth of the current moment\, the music on erer dedicates itself\, with intricacy and care\, to the listener. A band that wanted only to aggrandize its own precious feelings of alienation wouldn’t go to the trouble of writing choruses and solos as powerful and effective as these. Ever since Glitterer began\, in 2017\, when Ned Russin began inconspicuously recording and releasing songs out of his New York apartment — short\, spooky synth/drum-machine-based existential ditties that made your toe tap and your skin crawl — the songs have reliably gotten brighter\, crunchier\, catchier\, and less ambivalent about their own charms. In this regard\, Glitterer’s erer is something of an apotheosis\, a record that says\, Yes\, the world-at-large is miserable and dissolute\, but music is eternal and beautiful\, and can’t be taken away from us so long as we continue to play it. So that’s what we’re going to do. We have to.

DESCRIPTION:Following the band’s 2012 tour DeVotchKa frontman Nick Urata was left feeling conflicted. On one hand\, his band was as popular as ever\, playing their critically-acclaimed songs from over seven albums to fans at sold- out shows around the globe\, and Urata was enjoying a burgeoning career as a film score composer\, with a GRAMMY nomination already under his belt. But on the night of DeVotchKa’s final show of the tour\, onstage in an enormous arena in Mexico\, Urata belted out the first few lines only to discover his microphone powered off—a simple mistake\, but one that would later cause him to reflect deeply on his stake in life. \n“You try not to make a big deal out of it\, but you don’t recover from that for the rest of the show\,” Urata says\, now smiling at the memory. “It happened more than once on that tour\, I went into a bit of a tailspin after that. I wondered if the universe was trying to tell me something I didn’t want to hear. I was realizing how nearly anyone can sing\, almost everybody has the ability\, but if you want to perform for people\, then you have to fight for it.” \nFollowing the tour\, the band—Urata (vocals\, guitars\, Theremin\, trumpet\, piano)\, Jeanie Schroder (acoustic bass\, sousaphone)\, Shawn King (drums\, percussion\, trumpet)\, and Tom Hagerman (violin\, viola\, accordion\, piano)—enjoyed a series of gigs at smaller venues. Urata spent those shows both reconnecting with his audience on a more intimate level and rediscovering his love for his craft. It was a necessary moment that inspired him to begin work on a new DeVotchKa album—a process that would take a lot longer than anyone anticipated\, but that would prove essential. \n“I realized the motivation is simply how much I love singing\,” Urata says\, “and I just want to keep this conversation going with people who have connected with our band. Those shows after the big tour were when things started to fall back into place\, I could see that people were moved by the lyrics and singing them back to me. It is a rare and powerful thing to connect with people like this. It is the thing that keeps us going.” \n\nUrata began work on a new album\, using that intimate dynamic with his fans as motivation. Despite a strong work ethic that compels him to work each and every day\, the writing process proved to be a slow yet cathartic burn. (Naturally\, his film work was also keeping his hands full — since the GRAMMY-nominated score to Little Miss Sunshine\, Urata has composed the scores for myriad films including Crazy Stupid Love\, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot\, and Paddington. Most recently\, he composed the original theme song and score for the Netflix Original A Series of Unfortunate Events.) \nThrough persistence\, concerted effort\, and patience\, Urata found his path. A musical perfectionist\, the longer-than-typical window provided more opportunities to tinker\, a blessing that can often be accelerated or outright ignored in these modern times. As Urata says\, if you are going to hand him the luxury of time\, he is going to put it to good use—and time is often what he requires. \n“I get a creative spark and then have to chase it down\, sometimes\, for years\,” he says. “One thing I’ve learned from great writers is to force yourself to show up to work every day\, even if you feel you don’t have anything—apply yourself and it will come. It really does work. Writing music has always been the one thing in my life that’s subconsciously gnawed at me. I have to do it.” \nUrata pulled from old notebooks and half-formed ideas as much as he conjured fresh material from the present. But in writing lyrics he has found that nearly every idea came from the past— despite the tense in which he sings. “I have a file in the back of my head with things that have happened to me\, and that’s where I get my songs. I’m probably not alone in that. A lot of people think the song is happening now—‘you must be going through a horrible breakup right now.’ Really\, I’m just getting in touch with the past. When you add music\, it can take you right back there. Music is the great coaxer of those feelings\, and that’s why people connect to songs. Music opens you up.” \nIn writing for what he would eventually title This Night Falls Forever\, Urata tapped directly into his past\, connecting the dots between that audience-and-artist relationship and a period of intense self-discovery. “One common thread in these songs is their sentimentality\,” Urata says. “When you first discover rock and roll\, that’s usually the same time you’re discovering girls or boys\, when everything is so romantic and huge—that era of your life is where these songs are coming from. The songs are usually the same\, thematically: why don’t you love me\, why did you leave me\, I don’t love you anymore\, I miss you\, I want to die…there’s only a couple themes when you break it down. I’ve always dealt in romance. I don’t know what else to write about.” \nAnd from the album’s first lines (“I can draw a straight line through my mind right back to the good times/ back when all the stars were aligned”) it’s clear that This Night Falls Forever\, set for release on August 24\, 2018\, via Concord Records\, is a heartrending look backwards and forwards at once—the sound of a man searching within to face his future. From the rhythmic riff and urgent crooning of the opener\, “Straight Shot\,” with its cohesive lyrical story and speedy acoustic strumming\, to the exotic waltz of “Let Me Sleep” and its spiraling strings and dramatic vocals\, the flight is immediate. \n“Done with Those Days” is a lush\, slow-burning whistler\, while the driving\, playful “My Little Despot” is a cautionary tale about the travails of lover-as-dictator\, which Urata recognizes could easily be viewed as a political moment despite his best intentions. “It was a cute idea two years ago but now it has a whole different connotation\,” he says. “Today’s political climate has changed the availability of our lexicon. There is a temptation to bring politics and protest into our songs\, but we have to have some respite from it or we’re all gonna go crazy.  Music is a force of nature that makes people fall in love\, that’s where the change will come from” \nElsewhere\, the lush and tightly packaged “Love Letters” covers the entire arc of a relationship. The song represents yet another incident where time and distance proved a completion charm\, “It would never tell me where to go\,” he says. “When I came back to it\, the second half wrote itself. It was one of those rare occasions when it all happened in one day.  It asks a pretty raw question—‘Are you still in love with me?’ You can think of that as a metaphor for being in the band\, too: ‘Am I still supposed to be doing this? Please give me a sign\, because I’m still in love with it!’ And I’m just now realizing that following the thing you love is all you can do\, and watch the chips fall where they fall.” \nUrata cites the scope of the album as even more ambitious than DeVotchKa’s past work\, with more detailed arrangements\, more people involved including full orchestras\, and an overall bigger sound. He praises the work of his bandmates\, whose ability to build upon his demos lends the finished songs a sense of flesh and bone. “They enhanced it\, rounded it out\, and made it cool\,” Urata says. “They added that live feeling that takes the songs to the next level. A big part of making a record is capturing the humanity” \nAs for the album’s title\, Urata was inspired by yet another period of transition\, albeit one that occurs each and every day: the passing of day into night. It’s a fitting motif for his process\, a constant reminder that toil eventually makes way for transport. \n“I wanted to capture that moment of twilight falling\, where there’s electricity in the air and you get that sense that everything is going to be OK\,” Urata says. “The harsh sunlight is gone\, you start to get messages from your spiritual side\, and it’s not all about the day’s work and politics and struggles. Theres’s a sense of something bigger at twilight; that’s where it came together for me. When I was going through a really tough time\, a bad breakup years ago\, the days were terrifying and lonely and I was broke—but once the night fell\, there was music. If I could just get to sunset\, things will look good. I guess that feeling’s stuck. You want the night to last forever. It’s the aesthetic of the album\, the thing I picture when I close my eyes.”
