Harvard Museum of Natural History
Amazing Eggs on Display at Harvard Museum of Natural History
Get ready for Easter by exploring theHarvard Museum of Natural History to find a stunning display of egg diversity, showcasing specimens of living birds that range in size from the tiny hummingbird egg the size of a coffee bean at 0.03 ounces to the 3.3-pound ostrich egg. See the champion of all eggs, the basketball-sized egg of the extinct elephant bird, as much as seven times bigger than the ostrich egg, or equivalent in volume to roughly 180 hen eggs.
Why did birds develop different strategies in egg size? A larger egg, favored by ground nesting birds, means more nourishment for the young. It requires a longer incubation time, but develops young that can begin to move and eat right after hatching. The largest egg compared to the size of the bird is the kiwi bird, native to New Zealand, whose egg can weigh 20 percent of the weight of the female. Other birds have a different strategy, laying smaller eggs yielding young that are helpless and dependent on parental care.
You can also find some intriguing rabbits in the museum, including a New England cottontail in New England Forests, and a Marsh rabbit and Eastern cottontail in the Great Mammal Hall, underneath the huge Right Whale.
For Easter weekend, April 7 and 8, those with Bank of America credit cards are admitted free to the museum through the BoA’s Museums on Us program (which gives cardholders free admission to 150 select museums across 31 U.S. states for the first full weekend of every month.)
In addition, all Massachusetts residents are admitted free, with ID, from 9 am until noon on Sunday mornings. Harvard Museum of Natural History is on the historic Harvard campus, 7-8 minute walk from Harvard Square.
