CAMBRIDGE — It’s been a happy 60th birthday for Pinocchio’s Pizza & Subs, with the renewed national attention it’s getting after making the list of USA TODAY’S Best Pizza in America.
The list, complied by USA TODAY Network food writers, highlights a diverse list of America’s best pizza restaurants, spanning classic New York‑style slices to inventive regional pies. Locations run from Alabama to Wisconsin.
Pinocchio’s, a cozy, no-frills compact pizzeria tucked on a side street in Harvard Square, has gained national attention over six decades through mentions on television shows like “Suits,” as well as from celebrity customers like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Ben Affleck and Steve Carell.
The family-owned pizzeria is best known for its Sicilian-style pepperoni slices, made with fresh dough, sauce and a blend of two mozzarella cheeses prepared daily. The small, bustling pizza shop features simple tables, a service counter stacked with Sicilian and thin-crust pizzas, and a large hand-painted mural depicting Pinocchio and other storybook characters eating pizza. Photos, memorabilia and signs of generations of student customers give the space the feel of a well-worn Harvard Square institution rather than a modern chain restaurant.
